Betjeman himself would have been proud.

Nice one! I'm glad you mentioned the roundabouts though - once upon a time in a previous job I used to visit MK regularly as one of my clients (a major UK bank) has data centre facilities there. And I used to drive from London. Driving down H8 pretty much all the way from Junction 13 of the M1 - as you leave one roundabout and head to the next you only just manage to get into 4th gear when you have to start braking again as you approach the next roundabout. That's really annoying - as the driving becomes very tiring and monotonous.

The football team actually died when Wimbeldon moved there. they were called Milton Keynes City FC, & played in the South Midlands League, the same level of non league football where the new club AFC Wimbledon started at in the Combined Counties League in 2002.
The AFC Wimbeldon fans/ex-Wimbeldon fans always said that Wimbledon should change their name to Mitlon Keynes, ignnoring the fact there was aalready a team bearing that name. I've often wondered why the community concious AFC Dons never offered to play the real MK team to raise funs for them in a friendly..and why were they so keen to see a name change? Perhaps to erase the name Wimbledon from full time professional footbal & ease their guilty consciences why they didn't bother to fight to stay at Plough Lane when they left there to move right across the expanses of South London to go to Selhurst Park...nothing to do with the fact they were blided by the greed & glory of the Premiership that Wimbeldon FC were in then was it...
(Having said that franchising is wrong, & they were one hundred per cent right to walk away from Wimbledon FC and form a brand new club...)

Debster beat me to it.

Responding to a weekend blog entry/comment on a Monday is probably akin to p'ssing in the wind, but I just read Gawblimeyman's comment with my mouth wide open. I applaud the opening and closing sentiments (almost) entirely, but the middle section...

Where to start?? First, maybe by correctly spelling Wimbledon. There, feels a bit more respectful already.

The name change from "Wimbledon FC": simply, the franchised team no longer had anything to do with the community of Wimbledon; the name *had* to change. The fact that there was already a team called MK, sadly ignored by local footie fans and music entrepreneurs alike, was kind of irrelevant.

A fund-raiser for MK City? Erm, why? As much as we sympathised with their neglect, AFC Wimbledon weren't formed to save MK City. Any guilt should lie on the conscience of Franchise organisation and fans, who did a lot more to hasten the demise of MK City.

The move from Plough Lane to Selhurst? That was forced on the club in 1991 by the restrictions of the Taylor Report, and which, by the way, pre-dated the "greed & glory of the Premiership".

The bottom line, as Gawblimeyman has the grace to point out, is that "franchising is wrong". But please don't get the chronology wrong: it is Wimbledon FC that walked away from the fans, not the other way round.

Thanks for letting get that off my chest! Sorry DG, but you started by giving the football club the oxygen of publicity MK Dons, not so much a football club as a property deal.

More details, should you require them, at http://www.afcwimbledon.co.uk/ and the WISA press release on the sad day the move to MK was sanctioned: http://www.wisa.org.uk/cgi/l/art...ion=show&
