Nice to see that Lambeth is good at something, as the rest of its services are rather crap

what Gareth said. That's got to be the first time Lambeth's got three stars in anything

There is the excellent Green Chain network of walks in SE London though no points for Greenwich and Lewisham - it's not exactly hard to include a link to their very good PDFs...

The Green Chain's one of London's six strategic walks, mentioned at the top of today's post, so I'm not including it here.

Greenwich and Lewisham do both link to the Green Chain website (but they don't do much else).

wow my Newham borough walk, i never seen Newham walk before, thanks for giveing four star to my borough

If you want to walk Hackney, go here
Odd the council doesn't link, as the walks were developed in part by its own archives.

Thanks for the response, DG - hopefully it'll shame some of the low star boroughs into improving their act! And I think I'll be trying out some of my nearby walks later in the summer - good work.

Dull and joyless - yep that's Croydon alright

Thanks for this. I'll be visiting the relatives later this month and may, no WILL, need an escape route for a few hours at a time!

Brilliantly, the main organised walk on Lewisham's site is actually in Greenwich. Cheers, lads, saves our own bunch of clowns from doing it

Wandle Trail: fantastic path, can be both walked and cycled. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

dg writes: been, taken photos.

The TFL website used to list a large number of these trails, but when the "6 strategic walks" were publicised, all the other walks were removed. According to TFL it was because they didn't have the resources to verify they all still existed and were usable. A shame.

There's a fantastic book by Colin Saunders: "London: the definitive walking guide" (Cicerone Press 2002: ISBN 1-85284-339-X), which contains details of every walk in every borough and the six TfL strategic walks on top. Well worth twelve quid or so if you like walking London.

And those of us who live outside London are catered for too, there are walks in the Surrey area on the Surrey C.C. website, free to download, which are also published in the local paper.

How, Sir, can you dismiss Hammersmith and Fulham as a one star borough? Upgrade immediately! London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham has Chelsea FC, BBC Television Centre, The SB Empire, it's got canals, it's got nature reserves, it's got classic London garden squares, it's got sullen 1960s housing estates, it's got grit, it's got Steptoe & Son, it's where the Sweeney hang out, it's where Harry Palmer boils an egg, it's where Mamma Mia and Trainspotting started out as a stage plays, it's got the Thames. It's got Westfield!!!

And Barnet - NO stars! Late Medieval Church, QE 1 grammar school, Hadley Wood and the lichen covered obelisk to where the Earl of Warwick 'was defeated and slain' by a dagger through the eye. Especially evocative, like any old battlefield, on a misty morning. Where Gosford Park was filmed.
