BORISNOT BORIS

BREXIT

I still have the feeling that we're headed for scenario #1. The Blimps of Bagshot seem set on Boris as their only hope to defeat the Faragists; Boris has a Churchill complex and will drive us over the cliff out of hubris. As one commentator posited a while ago, don't be fooled by the bumbling-oaf act and silly hair - at Oxford, he was only 'one duelling scar away from the full Heydrich'.
Ah - I remember looking at this table thinking “can’t wait until this silliness is over...”

I now think the silliness will never be over. :-(
I'm still pinning my hopes on option 9. To increase the chances of option 9 happening, I walk around most of the day with my fingers in my ears while I shout 'La la la la la...'
If ever there was an age of managerial government with leadership, it is long gone. The options we are offered all include tinpot dictators. That's not a choice.
Some days I pinch my nose and wade in to the moral cesspit that is the comments section of the Mail Online. I probably need to stop doing that. But it’s worth repeating a very highly rated comment I saw there yesterday:

“I don’t care if we pollute the planet for people in the future. I don’t care about people losing jobs. I don’t care if the Irish bomb themselves or the Scots leave the union. I JUST WANT MY BREXIT.”

Three years ago I would have been convinced this was an attempt at satire.
You missed an option: The one where Boris or Not Boris is unimportant...
The take-away message from the last three years seems to be "don't think this is as bad as it can get."

I'm not naturally a complete pessimist, but I'm rapidly evolving into one.
Three years ago I probably went for option 8. Now it looks like the best I can hope for is option 7.

@ Gege; Ye gods and little fishes, that's truly scary!
And who knows, if this whole mess is not over by 2021, we may yet go into one of the "NOT TRUMP" options.
You missed out "partial Brexit" as an option...which at the moment is just as likely. Especially considering the fact we were not fully into the EU ethos to start with (no adoption of the € for example).

Unless of course we have a second referendum...in which case a further option of "civil war/no civil war" would probably be justified.
I think Dan has it right with "I now think the silliness will never be over. :-( "

We had a referendum that it was claimed was a once in a generation vote and that the Government would implement the decision. But it is clear that the Government had no plan for leave and that despite this we have not left because parliament has been unable to pass any of the options for leave. (Or to agree we should remain either, for that matter).

I can't see it being politically possible to just cancel Brexit without another referendum.

So if we have another referendum and the result is remain we've ended up with a 1-1 draw. I can't really see how we can then say the matter is settled.

I suspect opinions may have shifted so a new referendum will give a remain result, but probably it will be very close still.

Many would like that to mean "the matter is now closed and settled", but it will then be very hard to resist calls for a 3rd referendum in future on the basis we've had a 2nd because the public might have changed their mind - why can't they change it again.

The EU have also indicated that they think part of the reason for Brexit is that we are "on the edge" of the EU. I.E. not in the € not in Schengen. If they suggest we join one or both of these I suspect it will be unpopular and might well shift the balance of opinion back to Brexit. They may pass laws to require this of all members in future. Similarly if there are moves to create an EU wide army it might be unpopular etc.

In short I think if we have 2 referendums it will be very hard to resits calls for a 3rd, 4th, 5th etc, each time the losing side feels the opinion may have shifted.

Lastly I think that the Tories will have rightly lost a lot of votes over Brexit. However I also think Labours attempts to sit on the fence and please both sides has ended up pleasing neither side and lost them a lot of votes too.

I suspect both parties have lost enough votes they could not get a majority. So I suspect any new Government for the foreseeable future will be a coaltition of some sort and very possibly a mixture of anti and pro brexit parties. That will make it hard to avoid another referendum. Though it is likely also to make it harder to leave too.

So I don't know what the answer is. But I don't think there is an easy answer. The cat is out the bag. It is very hard to put it back in!

The fact is the vote has shown the country is very polarised on the issue and close to 50/50 split.
Three years ago. How very depressing.
We've already had a second referendum - the first was in 1975. Best of three?
No Brexit means no democracy, ultimately it has to happen.
Darren, completely agree. It will be a total failure of democracy if we don't leave and all the promises aren't honoured. That would include:

Being £350 million better off
No question of leaving until a deal has been agreed.
No economic disruption
No downside to brexit
Having all the trade deals lined up and ready to go
More money for farmers and science
Scrapping of vat on fuel and tampons
Etc etc

I'm sure you'll agree anything less than this would be a failure of democracy and therefore unacceptable.
1. Any referendum with precedents should be based on the assumption that the previous one(s) do(es)n't work. So there's no such thing as "1-1" or "best of three", just like how the 2016 one wouldn't be counted together with the 1975 one. Always count the latest only.

2. Referendum on polarizing issue like this should be determined with an at least 2/3 threshold.

3. "Silliness" should be for harmless stuff. What many here are referring to should be named as "stupidity".
Gege, we'll be better off, £350 million was hyperbole; so was Project Fear. I didn't believe either.

Economic disruption has already been caused by bitter Remainers, who are desperate to make it appear a disaster, time to move on.

The money received by Farmers and Science is money we already pay in.
The EU take a cut and send some back.
Hopefuly some will be maintained while subsidies are re-evaluated.

I would love to see scrapping of vat on fuel, tampons and most things but I didn't see it from the EU.

It's inevitable, so you might as well stop whining and work with it.

Anything less would be unacceptable...
No comment which contains the phrase "bitter Remainers" can be taken seriously.
It's entirely possible that we'll get No Trump due to impeachment, resignation, losing the next election, whatever, before Brexit. You're bound to get Boris at some point for some amount of time, so I don't know how this scores out with your options.
