I wonder how long it'll be until we throw out first past the post...or get blindly led into a European superstate.

Heh, heh.... absolutely!

What about your Australian audience??
How about a special message for your two or three Aussie readers?

Every point you made apply to Australian elections, except we get 6 weeks notice and are bombarded with negative advertising campaigns.

We also are one of the few countries in the world that has compulsory voting. You can really say you have a mandate when 98\\% of the population vote. If you refuse to vote you are hit with a $50 (AUD) fine.

Some states are trying to move toward fixed 4 year terms. In my state, Victoria, the incumbent has passed a law fixing election date for the second last Saturday in September, which is also the day of the Australian Rules preliminary final.

Of course, as we are such a football mad state, this nicely distracts from the political campaign and encourages voters to vote early as the preliminary final starts around 2 pm.

Do you all vote on one day?? Forgive my ignorance, but when I was in London a few years ago Red Ken was up for London Mayor, and I seem to remember that the polls opened on a Tuesday and that you had a week to vote??

I'm not sure about the London Mayoral elections, but we normally only get a day to vote, and it's usually a Thursday, although this isn't compulsory.

It is always a Thursday. Which is stupid. It becomes even more obvious how stupid that is when we have European elections and all the UK vots have to stay uncounted until the weekend when the rest of Europe votes. Am I the only one thinking that perhaps we might get the turnout up if we could vote on a weekend? I mean, it's not rocket science is it? Lots of people work during the week making it inconvenient to vote. I will have to get up extra early in order to go to my polling station before work which is, usefully, also in the opposite direction to my route to work. I'm going, because I am determined. But if I was wavering that would surely put me off.

But with this election there is no real choice. Conservatives, its like picking up Marget Thatcher out of her grave. (Wait she aint dead yet.) Liar Tony, oh I dont know about renewing out nucleur weapons. (1 week later yes one week, and its reported he decided on renewing the stock pile.) Or the lib dems, okay thats not a real choice is it :D

Thanks god i am not able to vote hehe

The UK elections are so thoroughly British and long may it stay. And the Presidential elections are so thoroughly American. Difference being we take a interest in the American one (and take the piss out of them too) whilst no one here even knows that the Brits are going to the polls on Thursday.
