we're actually preparing for christmas 2005 as we type. the poppy appeal starting a bit earlier isn't \\_so\\_ bad though is it?

'Gleaming white seamen'. Phnarr phnarr. (sorry)

Can you still get the white poppies from the Peace Pledge Union? Haven't seen them in years.

You're assuming that someone else will notice. Sometimes they don't...

My father is in the middle of a commission to write a book for the 200th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar. Given his inability to not run late, I can at least guarantee that *that* won't come out very long before the genuine anniversary.

According to Amazon there are more than 10 books about the battle of Trafalgar due to be published during the next 12 months, and there are about 5 new ones out for this Christmas too. Good luck to your father - it's a crowded market out there.

It'll also be the 60th anniversary of VE Day next year, which means the Remembrance Sunday emphasis will shift from WW1 to WW2.

You can still get white poppies from the Peace Shop in Exeter so they may be available elsewhere. I do find the wearing of the poppy early a little annoying because it implies it is being worn not to actually remember but to be seen to be wearing a poppy. I saw someone with a car version the other day (pinned to the front a la the red noses) which I just thought was tasteless.
