Illuminating as ever DG. I am especially amazed to read that ATM machines (or at least one of them) existed in London in the late 60s- we didn't have them up north until the late 80s as I recall!

(I was so amazed I had to go away on google and check- the 1967 date, and even the Reg Varney thing, are confirmed in several quite reliable-looking places, so I must apologise for momentarily doubting you!)

stephen glass?

crews hill looks quite cruisy.

I'm suprised there's no big sign at Crew's Hill saying 'here be dragons' or 'abandon hope all ye who exit here'. Don't you need immunisations to leave London?

*ahem*

Enfield is also the home of the first hospital I worked at (and the one I worked at the most), one of only four hospitals in the country to get the covetted "0 star" rating twice in a row and where a nurse manager is currently doing hard time for nicking morphine based drugs. Chase Farm Hospital is also often in the news for killing people by mistake...
It also houses the Regional Psychiatric Secure unit, which is built on a plague pit. The hospital itself is built around an old workhouse, which is why the wards are all named after colonies.

It's not actually a bad place to live though, and you are very close to the country, and also close to the centre of London. If the rent wasn't so high I'd still be living there myself.

Aaah, Pickets Lock. Sad indeed..... and a pretty crummy cinema nowadays (one of our locals). But at least you can always get a table in the Pizza place (when it's open).

Heh, heh... and you're spot on about the Garden Centre Zone in Crews Hill.

i thought the rent was quite cheap in Enfield compared to other parts of London

A typical 3 bedroom semi in Enfield costs about £350,000. Which I found scary.

i was misinformed...

It's funny you should mention the 1997 demise of Michael Portillo - it was the highlight of the night for me. Now I live in Enfield Southgate ward and rejoice whenever I see Stephen Twigg's grinning mug on the front of a leaflet, even if I won't be voting for him ever. I pulled a slightly sneaky trick a couple of months ago of emailing the local Labour office and asking about his voting record on Iraq and student loans. I was expecting a shameful admission of spinelessness but in fact got absolutely nothing, and still haven't. Even honesty would have been something; he's supposed to be my MP after all!

I was at that cinema on Saturday, watching Wimbledon; though I had gone to see Sky Captain, but the screen had technical difficulties and the 12.40 showing had been cancelled.

Pretty crummy and mostly employs Russians, who let their mates in for free.

Very late to this blog-just a couple of years but I didn't know about you then. You should have gone to Southgate tube station-it has the old fashioned esculators, lights, and not much modern technology.

And your were right about Crews Hill, in fact you are still right about Crews Hill. It is to be avoided at weekends at all costs..bit like a green version of Ikea.

I look forward to the next random borough.
