Wow.... I'd never sussed the significance of the Lee bit of the "Lee Enfield" rifle before despite living nearish the river myself.

Most people that I know who live in Enfield love their non-London postcode, ie EN1 and they swear they are Middlesex...

Isn't Forty Hall more commonly called "Deuce"?

"what a waist that is" And the groan was heard 'round the office.

Thanks for that link to the photo gallery of Holden's work, too.

What a great idea btw (the whole 'random borough' thing). You've sparked off several ideas in my tiny little mind.

If anyone else happens to be in Enfield, why not take a visit to Enfield Town, the proper way for supporters to break away from a football club with dignity.

I used to go to Cockfosters to college - one of the only times I've been trapped in a tube carriage with a flasher was between oakfield and cockfosters. I expect the most famous thing there is Middlesex University.

"...a rather splendid selection of traditional English retailers with not one well-known chainstore in sight."

So you didn't see the Carphone Warehouse then?

As a Cockfosters resident (always great giving out your address to people and adding the emphasis on the 'Cock') and fan of the architect Charles Holden I find the terminus at Cockfosters to be quite fitting when compared to the previous few stops. You really do feal like you have come to the end of the line with its shed-like structure. A similar looking station exists at the terminus at Uxbridge.

And yes, I run the website charlesholden.com (soon to be updated)

Sorry, I must have missed the Carphone Warehouse while I was busy looking at Poisson the fishmonger, Chippers chip shop, Dapper formal menswear and Goodwin's Wines.

As for charlesholden.com, we like

Enfield Town, the home of the first hole in the wall cash machine by Barclays bank. There is a small mix of historic buildings, quite messy actually. but worth a look!
