I used to work in 190 High Holborn, which was very handy for lunchtime strolls around Covent Garden or picnics in Lincoln's Inn. I am sure you will grow to like the area.

The Lincoln's Inns of Court are another fantastic secluded London space, with beautiful buildings (which I sneeked in one day). They are open to the public during weekdays, and heartily recommended!

i thought you might be able to tell me about that tudor style building on holborn (at the junction of grays inn rd i think). eh?

It's Staple Inn, and it's lovely.

Don't know much about it, though.

Ah, you're in my territory now. I used to work down by Holborn Circus, now I'm just a little way up Gray's Inn Rd. Some great shops and pubs dotted about. A few nice parks. Bits of history here and there. It's not a bad area, really.

Hope your first day is going well...

I used to have a bank account with a branch on High Holborn...*sorry for the most boring comment ever*

worth a visit is The Soane Museum in Lincolns Inn's Fields (there's a location with potential apostrophe confusion). http://www.soane.org/

Also, the Angel of St Giles is a Samual Smith pub at the corner of Endell Street and Holborn and is the spot at which condemned prisoners on their way to Tyburn were given their last drink. The pub where Holborn meets Kingsway is allegedly haunted.

I think you're also quite close to the Temple Inn? That means you're close to the Knights of the Templar church - the only round church in London (as featured, annoyingly, in The Da Vinci Code). (And Temple Bar was where beheaded...er...heads were displayed.)

Fetter Lane was were the Great Fire halted and is also the lane down which burning liquer ran during the Gordon Riots of 1780. The statue at the bottom of it is cross-eyed.

IIRC, Red Lion Square was popular with the Golden Dawn lot but I'd need to check my Aliester Crowley walk to confirm that.

Fianlly, Long Acre is where there was a zoo in the eightenth century. With an elephant on the first floor. and Hamley's first toy store was on High Holborn.

Er...I did a guide to a fictional London, much of which was based in this area. Can you tell?

I survived my first day in the new office, and thanks for all your hints and tips to surviving the surrounding area too. I'll try not to forget to wave if I see any of you local workers out taking the air at lunchtime.
