Hmmmm.
This is 'respectable/upmarket' to me (ie I would spend my money in them in this order) as opposed to my perception of what other people might think (which would be quite different). Hope that is OK.

Interestingly (not really but as we're on the subject) our local rather tatty Safeway is supposed to become a super-duper Waitrose before the end of the year. I hope they've got a large budget.

hmm DG, how does respectable (honest and decent), automatically equate to being upmarket?
upmarket is easy, but not so respectable. We buy tonnes from Aldi,if you pick your brands carefully it is cheap but of excellent quality, in many cases better than the so called quality supermarkets. They treat their employees well, paying above other supermarket rates I understand, and it shows in that their staff are much friendlier than most.
Around here they also have a following amongst the Range Rover brigade, a bit of shabby chique perhaps.
Aldi would therefore be at the top for respectabilty but at the bottom for upmarket, in my humble opinion of course.

My perception of the co-op may be wonky and biased towards the fact the ones in the north were massive and the one here in the south is just totally impossible to get to by public transport.

I'm going to have to leave A, D and E out because I've never heard of them. My local "H" has improved quite a bit since Morrisons bought them, but to be fair I've never been in a Morrisons - gives me a good opinion of them, but I'll have to leave them out. I also hear that "I" used to be regarded as quite good, but I've only lived here for two years and I find them quite crap. I find them "upmarket" by virtue of being expensive, not good.

Given a Co-op of any size nearby, I'd prefer to shop there a lot more often. Asda gets bottom marks for being owned by WalMart, even if they're not bad in and of themselves.

My local (N22) is a Safeway and it's a right dump - the fruit's been jumped up and down on and the floors are always sticky. A Sainsbury's Central (half the stock at twice the price) has just opened down the High Road (replacing the big branch that's now a Matalan), and it's pretty decent. Sainsbury's used to be a sewer but it's really come along in recent years. Tesco are the best but my nearest are either Colney Hatch or Leyton - a bit too far even for their smashing fresh bread and Danish pastries. Irritatingly, the Tesco Metro (a third of the stock at three times the price) in Oxford Street, a branch I used a great deal when working in town, has closed.
A fun(?) experiment next time you're in Friern Barnet. Go to the Co-Op and tell me if there isn't a strong smell of weewee. I can't imagine why. The place was even stripped and rebuilt from top to toe last year and the piss smell came straight back!

With 31 results in (thankyou) it's still very tight for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th places. In alphabetical order that's Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Somerfield. Other positions seem pretty much settled.

Morrison's is superb and I would put it top of the bill. And it sells a good range of decently-priced wine. However, my social stratification would be:
L, F, I, J (allure to middle classes of small, expensive, crap branches), C & K, H, G, B, A, D, E
In terms of where I would shop:
G, K, I: the first excellent, quality available in the second, tasty bargains to be had in the last.

Talking of ethics, Waitrose, being part of the John Lewis Group, presumably have excellent conditions etc for their staff. John Lewis Group is often listed as one the best employers in the country.

As 'Random' says, the organic range at Waitrose is superb. But rather bizarrely, I was in a Morrisons today and was VERY impressed ath their 'Farmers Market' section which was choc full of excellent organic stuffs.
I empathise with NiC's feelings, but isn't that the way ALL supermarkets operate their businesses these days?

K hasn't done very well but we stopped for a drink in one of their cafes part way through a car journey on Friday and they couldn't provide a glass glass or even a straw.That's pretty downmarket in my book.

M&S stinks - their sandwiches are the pits these days.
