Thanks. I hope other people test it too.

Seriously though, comment spam sucks, I've known a few blogs disable commenting entirely because of it which is a real blow for people who like to give feedback.

Wankers aint they? I believe some serious anti-spam stuff is coming soon (The Company are trialling it secretly) which will apply to email and comments (as we run moblogs!). Prisons too good for 'em. A little trip to Stamford Bridge on a Saturday wearing a "I Hate Chelsea" shirt might help re-adjust their attitudes.

I very much doubt that it's attributable to your commenting.

....errr..not that I condone violence...of course...well maybe to these idiots, virus writers, hackers, Sun/NOTW journos, timeshare salesmen, Chris Evans, Brian Sewell, Dale Winton and especially Davina "should I yell?" McCall

From what I've read, what they do is target blogs with Google 5 (at least) rankings, as posting their URL in the comments will be picked up as a link by search engine bots.

I think it's your popularity (6 currently) rather than your commenting habits that has led to you being targeted.

oooh err....you'd better get crap then...perhaps Cristopher from metblogs can edit for you....a sure fire ratings loser

If you could get me a list of the IPs, I'm sure that one or two of them might be stopped.

For awhile at least.

I've thought some more...

The spammers used to target blogs using MT or self-coded. Now that most of these blogs are effectively blocking spammers, they have started targetting old posts on blogs using 3rd party commenting systems as the site owners won't spot new comments on old posts and remove them. Therefore, their number of links, and therefore Google status, increases.

Where they slip up is when they target blogs using the upgraded versions of 3rd party software where you get comments emailed to you - as you spot their spam and delete them.

Unfortunately for them, having checked using the very useful Google PageRank Calculator, all my comment boxes have a Google Rank of zero.

It's still worth banning the IP addresses since they seem to run out of 'em eventually. I had the same problem for a while with bestiality porn sites (why me?) and mobile phone sales (pretty dumb, since I hate mobile phones). I had to ban about a dozen IPs in each case but thankfully I've not been bothered by them since, touch wood.

thanks for that

thou shall not blog whilst 'working from home' ;o)

This is a daily bind for me. I've had 100 in 45 minutes once this week. I do wonder whether theres any scope in doing a 'whois' check on their websites and then reporting them to their website hosting providers, but I just don't have the time or energy. I suspect it is your Google ranking that interests them rather than your posts on other blogs - as noted by a previous commenter.
