You're forgiven.

I was reading this and thinking I should point you in the direction of the excellent post of London Inheritance, then I reached the end! 🙄🙄
Fascinating, thanks DG. The London Inheritance blog was also worth the read. I’ve been to both ends of the Yantlet line without having a clue that it existed.
Totally fascinating! Does a medieval proprietorial boundary necessarily coincide with the point where an estuary becomes open sea?

Some years ago I was regularly able to swim 30 lengths of the 33.3m pool in central Southend in my lunch hour.
As an alternative summer activity, I used to go down to the beach near the Crowstone at high tide and swim out to, and around, the obelisk, and then back to the shore without stopping. I couldn't do that now! The pool was demolished and replaced by a new 25m pool on the outskirts of the Borough which, like all others, has been closed since March. |
I visited and photographed all the London Stones three years ago:
captainjpslog.blogspot.com/2017/08/visiting-london-stones.html Interesting project! |
The Staines stone moved to memorial gardens in 2012. Fascinating plaque giving all the history. Sure I have a photo of it but can't find it.
Looks like you were on Southend Pier the same day as theperimeter.uk walking photographer @QuintinLake, who is a week away from becoming briefly famous.
err..It's Staines-upon-Thames.
Refund!
I was looking out for Quintin but he was a few hours behind, unfortunately (and only reached the Crow Stone yesterday).
Thank you for NOT calling it Staines-upon-Thames.
Fascinating blog today DG. I love anything interesting or historic to do with the Thames. Thanks for all the links to previous blogs and places.
There's also a London Stone near Cannon Street station, which I think this blog has covered before.
I have never heard it called Staines-upon-Thames. Doesn't matter what you append, it's still called Staines. Might as well just tough it out.
Spelthorne Borough Council now call it Staines Upon Thames and have signs everywhere saying so. Everyone else calls it Staines.
