darren spotted heaps of furtive glances at bags and foreigners yesterday on the victoria line.

They had been trying to get rid of bins on the tubes for years before someone stuck a bomb in a bin (NOT on the tube) - it just gave them the perfect excuse.

Which is why they haven't brought back bins on the tube, despite the IRA ceasefire and even though they have been brought back to London streets, these days.

Brixton was closed and the surroundings cordoned-off this morning because of a inidentified package...

they took down the bins in the belgian metro in 2001, then put them back up, took them down and they're up again. i don't think brussels is much of a target, but i'm sure somebody would love to blow up the EP.

you just never know.

Ticket barriers and policemen all down my bit of the Midland Main Line today. Not quite sure why...

it is interesting to look at what has been happening, and the mood generated, from here in France. The Madrid mass-murders and the aftermath have been covered very much from a personal point of view - there are far more people of hispanic origin living in France, and a european political point of view - the machinations of Aznar and the PP, and the reactions of ETA and the Basques. Now the emphasis is on what now for a closer Spanish/French/German directoire in Europe.
The percolation of horror and fear is much, MUCH less palpable, even tho' the government here have upgraded 'Plan Vigipirate' to second-higest or red level (this being France and aesthitically far more aware, the highest security alert is scarlet...)so train stations, airports etc are crawling with police and armed soldiers. It is now a country where at the moment you cannot take heavy luggage on trains...yet where 9 of a sample of 10 random flights from Charles-de-Gaulle Roissy airport carried a journalist carrying a variety of nasty weapons concealed in his luggage. France is also aware that it is now a target because of the Headscarf Affair, but people sense trouble will come from that in terms of mis-behaving muslim youths, not from terror attacks. This was a country, after all, where people protested AGAINST showing solidarity in the aftermath of Sepetember 11, and where people I know shrugged afterwards, saying it really was nothing to do with France and would have no impact on France.
There's no replacement for being aware of your surroundings and being responsible for yourself and your fellow citizens.

... and, sadly, we are all surrounded by many of our fellow citizens.

Good argument for Slough I'd say

I agree wholeheartedly with you, DG.

Hi DG
Just catching up on some
of the archives.
The comment from struck a chord.

So it did happen.
And London carries on with a few extra
police men patrolling the stations.

( I assume you get these as emails ?)
