mmmmmmmmmm! crushed ginger biscuits with ambrosia custard all over them. mmmmmmmmmm!

Do you know how they make the gelatine for the lemon jelly? If not, I wouldn't Google it. Revolting.

Watch the UHT milk when you open it - it will probably be in clumps and whey and very smelly. Best not opened I'd say, unless you've got lots of bleach to follow it down the sink with.

Instant custard usually works well as an explosive, due to the milk powder in it. Provided it's not too stale, like the last time we tried to ignite stale milk powder. The Night of The Dog, IIRC

Most of the sell by dates are meaningless anyway - there never used to be dates and you just tried a bit to see if it tasted funny. Anything with lots of sugar in it wont go off, niether will salt, vinegar or anything else that is used as a preservative. Dried foods are also edible for many years as long as you keep them dry. Crisps arent so good after a year though, the pastic must be permeable ...

I am pretty good at the moment - but that's cos I just moved, and chucked out all the out of date stuff. I had a Christmas pudding that was 3 years out of date, along with the custard powder I bought at the same time.

It's always those wonderful 'special offers' that draw me in, and then I never use them.

ahhh, you have got me at my best.
to start off with, i have one jar of wheatgerm, 9/12/97, a box of powder to make a chocolate pudding, 05/95, 'flan' mix, 21/05/99 and after the box of rowntree's jelly (july '95) i thought i'd better stop looking and perhaps clear out my cupboards ....

Sadly, our cupboards got cleaned of past-the-sell-by-date stuff a couple of weeks ago. I seem to remember that we had approximately a metric tonne of tea-leaves to throw out. Laziness triumphs over 'ooh, fancy flavours you can't get in teabags' once again.

Ok...

The milk's been poured down the sink (and it may have been off but it didn't smell at all - that's UHT for you).

I've been enjoying Earl Grey tea all day (with fresh milk).

The instant custard's in the bin.

The lemon jelly's in my stomach.

And the trifle made up a treat, and there's still half of it left in the fridge.

*DG attempts to extend his christmas holiday by contracting food poisoning...*

Oh Jeesus - Trifle from August 1996 and you're still alive.

Like annipink I moved just under two months ago so threw out my worst offenders.

However at the moment I am eating some eggs with a best before date of 16th December 2003 - however before I eat each one I am putting it in a bowl of water to see if it sinks or floats. Sinking good, floating bad, rather like witch hunting.

I have an unopened jar of truffle paste a Xmas pressie from at least two years ago which has a sell by date of 2005. I wonder if it will still be unopened at the end of 2005.

*Goes off Annie Mole fast*

I'm a very good swimmer

Coming soon - the DG hospital appeal following his recent case of food poisoning.

Ah but BW, you know that I meant 17th century witches and Crucible style trials, not 21st century witches like yourself

Although goodness knows what they would have made of your blogging powers.

I hardly ever eat eggs within date - and don't bother with the witch trial either. Haven't got ill yet (and I will keep repeating this mantra until I get salmonella from it).

Best before dates are just a guide right? Any advance on 1989?
