Sitting at work.
You're right about the fact that two minute silences meant more when one was younger(or should that be I?). Are we going to start remembering the dead from the two gulf wars in a similar way?

Does anyone have a statutory holiday for Remembrance Day in the UK? I remember that gov't and bank employees were given the day off in Canada, but I haven't noticed it here (not being a bank or gov't employee).

I keep meaning to make it over to Vimy Ridge one of these days to see the Canadian war memorial. Not just because that's where I'm from - it looks like a very moving memorial from what I've seen of it as well.

Very well put.

Nobody in the UK gets the day off today, given that the official day for remembrance is the Sunday nearest to November 11th.

And I hope they don't introduce a new date to remember any of the more 'modern' wars - today is supposed to cover them all.

Beautifully said.

There should be an official recognition like Veterans Day in the US. In Europe, I think only the French get a holiday and this year they get 2 days off because Armistice is on a Tuesday. More shocking is that the Belgians want to build a bridge over the newly discovered trenches on the Yprès salient. It's not enough to blow a bloody trumpet at the Menin gate everyday!
