I remember well when they first introduced paid-for directory enquiries. That was back in the day, of course. And it happened and came to pass that it was perceived as an essential service, and so you paid for it if you could be reasonably assumed to have access to a phone book. So you paid from a direct line, but if you got up off your arse, went downstairs, and across the road to the phone box, it was free. Hurrah for free things. Boo to 118 118.

I was going to close with a glib comment about having no idea what the directory enquiries number is in Ireland, but I do know it - 11811 - which is either a function of my memory for numbers, a result of the power of subliminal advertising, or a mistake.

BW knows how to get free directory enquiry calls from your home telephone

And when BW has finished what she should be doing, it will be put up at The Coven

I'm still not sure exactly *why* this happened. Apparently it's for our benefit...

Anyway, We had an organisation wide email this morning about this change and it mentioned that all 118 numbers would be blocked at the switchboard. I suspect this is because of some other information contained in that email.

Apparantly *if* you allow the service you have called (118 118 or whatever) to connect you to your required number then, the call will be charged at that service providers rate rather than the standard rate you would be charged if you'd dialed it yourself.

Now that's what *I* call a rip-off.

Moral? If this is true then *Don't* let them connect you as it'll cost a fortune.

Tis true Douglas.

*Thinks - maybe DG will start charging me for advertising - but, come on, DG, be charitable, I'm only trying to save your punters some pennies *

Random fact #1: I used to know one of the runners in that advert!

Find anyone anywhere in the world (as long as they're not ex-directory) for free with the above URL.

I used the old 192 perhaps twice in my life. I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

It's got a lot more expensive to call directory enquiries since them, especially from a payphone. So much for the glories of competition.
