Tunnelers obviously have a thing for Sainsbury's car parks - Nine Elms station is due to be built in one if the Northern line extension ever happens.
Staggering.
That makes two boring weekends in a row!
I managed to get on the Whitechapel tour yesterday. I agree that it was somewhat surreal to step from a Whitechapel side street into a construction site. It was interesting to learn about what they're doing and how they're doing it. DG's session was clearly more action packed than mine as there was no crane action.
I'm thinking few Londoners really fully realise what a massive project Crossrail is. Yes there are quite a few sites around but guess most people day to day may only pass one or two. Some sites have now just become part of the background. It is not like a new "Skyscraper" that makes a visual impact once finsihed because tunnels are, of course, hidden from view. Even when it is opened you'll just have the stations to look at the rest will be in the dark so to speak. Wonder who will officially open it? I, for one, hope it a ramdom group of the workers who made it all possible.
Just as Crossrail clay is being used to raise Wallasea Island from its present position 2m below sea level, HS2/Crossrail2 spoil would be useful to raise the Somerset Levels?
Tours of the Whitechapel site are available again this Sunday.
