Many Christmas memories of attending carols by candlelight at St Mary's growing up. Due to 'connections' my parents were able to get married in the church after it had been deconsecrated - special permission from the bishop was required I believe.
Friends of mine were also married at that church under special licence, for which they have an incredibly ornate "permission" on the wall. There can't be many people married there and as they have a son called Andrew I wonder if your previous commenter and I are talking of the same couple.
On my visit to St Mary's a widower who'd been married here was showing younger members of his family where the ceremony had taken place, and posing for photos in front of the lych gate.
I take it from your mention of the right rhythm that the rope swings the bell rather than just banging a hammer against the bell. It's remarkably easy to get the bell and the clapper inside swinging in unison so they never make contact; you have to check the bell at just the right point on its swing. The advantage once you get it right is a much louder "dong" than with a hammer, as the whole weight of the moving bell is hitting the clapper.
The Britney Spears video, if anyone else is curious, is 2017's "Criminal".
First paragraph tweaked, after a friendly nudge from the RCN.
