Damn! If only I'd gone to the Port this year! (In fact I've only taken the boat once, in the aforementioned 2011, because the weather's nearly always foul). But had I known DG was going to be there I'd certainly have made the effort!
Oh well, actually I wouldn't, as that was last weekend - bad timing DG!
Oh, and that's a boat, not a barge. Sorry, I'll stop now. You just got me all excited.

Stoke Bruerne mild warning:

I grew up in Northampton and would sometimes cycle to Stoke Bruerne, and several times visited the canal museum.
It's tiny! But cute and interesting.
SB is lovely, and you can walk up the canal to the tunnel entrance.
And near the tunnel is/was a blacksmiths forge with a fascinating guy working it.
Happy to oblige for all your boat pedantry requirements :-)
Sounds like an excellent Museum to add to my list of "things to do if in the area"!
I would have done that ice-breaking thing too. Having had children stripped me of any dignity I may have once possessed!!
And there's the London Canal Museum at King's Cross, which tells the story of the London canal system and the history of the ice trade to and from the capital.

dg writes: Congratulations. Today's other 10 points is yours! A fine museum.
If you don't like the look of Cheshire Oaks, how about the delights of the Blue Planet Aquarium? I used to work in Port Sunlight, and when things got stressy I'd jump in the car at lunchtime and hang out with the fishies. Back then it was a great place to spend some time (I vaguely recall I had a membership!), with lots of aquatic variation, and even the opportunity to tickle a ray or two if you're so inclined. The food, mind, was average, but I was there for the lunchtime ambiance, not so much the nosh. This was in the nineties, so I've no idea what the place is like now, but I found a visit to the Deep in Hull disappointing in comparison (likewise the Shark Reef in Las Vegas is fun but tiny, and now I sound like I'm fish-obsessed so I'll stop.)
