Very difficult not to get a non-3G phone nowadays!

If you do edge towards using smartphone capabilities (even if it's just loading a photo direct to flickr), then 3G is essential

3G and wifi of course.

3G

3G is the way to go for you, but just keep the 3G option turned off when you don't need it if you're worried about your battery life draining. That can double your battery life very easily. If you were getting e-mails pinged to you and browsing the Web all the time, 3G would need to be on much more, but for occasional map look-ups, on-the-go blogging, etc., you can just get it and leave it off. (In fact, you might be fine with keeping all mobile data off until you need to stop and use it, rather than having it on in the background.)

Very few non-3G phones around, anyway. I would avoid 4G, though. Makes little sense for your needs, drains battery, and you'll pay a premium.

I have 4G. This is my first smart phone, so I have no idea about 3G.

Certainly get 3G, but don't bother with 4G: I don't even think the UK has a decent 4G network yet (unlike Angola, funnily enough).

No, the UK won't have a 4G network for several years yet, and when it does it will incompatible with most current 4G devices

3G

It is more or less impossible to get a 2G only phone nowadays (and these are then the very basic "turn of the century" style feature phnes e.g. the Nokia 1661 I use when roaming with a local SIM).

The 4G phones that are available are not worth bothering with in the UK today - there are no 4G networks yet! I just used a colleague's LTE phone on our network here, and the battery life is really poor when using the 4G network! Also be aware that "4G" means different things to Europeans and American (their definition is much looser) - and any American "4G" device (e.g. the latest iPad) will currently only use their frequencies, and not those used in Europe/Asia/Africa.

What is important though is wifi - this is a great usage cost reducer, even if you are using the device at home on your own wifi connection! Better to save those MB on the mobile tariff for when you really need them!

3G (but check it's got WiFi too). There is so much free access to the internet in London (soon to come on London Overground too).

3G and wifi and bluetooth.

Also to the comment about data and battery life above - in general to keep your "small-computer-that-can-also-make-phone-calls" battery life at a useful level, check the following:

1. Turn off locationing (GPS) unless you are using it - and if possible set up applications so they can't use it without your permission.
2. Set email "pull" rerieval to manual, or a long time (e.g. not every 5 minutes!)
3. Turn off bluetooth if you are not using it
4. check wifi settings - reduce frequency that it scans for networks, enable power save settings, or just turn it off!

3G is utterly essential.
