One day I hope you will write about swimming or rowing a section of one of these riparian routes - or maybe you have already? Rowing part of the Thames near Windsor remains one of the most terrifying experiences I've had.
One of my favourite parts of the Thames.
I'm sure I remember seeing the bridge at Temple being built, and I'm not that old - the downstream account you link to suggests 1989 as the correct date.
In Higginson Park is Court Garden house, built by William Battie, who was a physician for mental illness, it is said it forgot to put in staircase, which had to be added later. The term Batty is said to come from his work
My husband's choice of activity on his 40th birthday was for us to walk from Henley to Marlow (visiting pub and 2nd hand bookshop in Henley). It was a beautiful sunny day and a lovely walk.
I have fond memories of doing this myself (the other way) on a bright winter's day in 2009. By the way, the footbridge at Temple is rather newer than 1959 - I think it's more like 1989.
Ah yes, sorry, the footbridge at Temple opened on 24th May 1989. It replaced the Temple Ferry which closed in 1953. That's a long gap to have a long gap.
The train ticket you bought is valid. Here's the official word: "Twyford – Henley-on-Thames, Maidenhead – Marlow, Slough – Windsor & Eton Central. CDR tickets issued to stations on the above First Great Western branch lines are valid to return from stations on the other branches, provided that the ticket is issued to the furthest point. This is to enable customers to walk the Thames Path (this easement is therefore sometimes referred to as the 'Thames Path Ticket')." CDR = cheap day return, ie off-peak ticket, valid after 09:30 Mon-Fri and all day at weekends.
I was canoeing along this stretch of the Thames on Sunday, from Shiplake to Henley to Hurley (via the Flower Pot). There were eight of us in three canoes, including a 1960s canvas and wood folding frame kayak which was fascinating to watch being assembled. It was a great day for it. Glad to hear that you were out and about along the same stretch.
I grew up in Marlow, and went to school in Henley, so this is my childhood. Haven't been back for a while, but walking from M to H with my mum used to be a regular summer pastime. Then the bus back! Didn't know Fawley Court had been sold by the mysterious Marian Fathers. This is a great walk on a clear winter's day too - especially if there is light snow on the Hambleden meadows.
