Err, first preserved /standard gauge/ steam railway (1960). The Tallyllyn (1951) and others are earlier.

But never mind nitpicking. The Bluebell is indeed a splendid day out and a wonderful bit of heritage. Sadly the new link at East Grinstead will not make as much difference as one might hope, due to Mr/Mrs Everybody's tendency to go by car. Until the oil runs out.
This is one of the finest days out I have had when on vacation in the UK. I felt like a little boy again, loved every moment, wonderful staff. You get to live a piece of history, I thoroughly recommend this as a day out.
Haven't been there for years and years. Still meaning to go, but think I'd look a little sad on my own watching the steam twain chugging along.
I really must get round to doing this!!!
5 year old grandson thought the Bluebell Railway was wonderful recently. And they sell dinosaur eggs in the shop at Sheffield Park. Unbeatable!!
