I thought it was "Shah mat" meaning "The king is dead".

I believe the bit now called Iran used to be part of Persia too.

How I hate to make my first ever comment here a criticism! But the fourth one from the bottom is wrong, as is the last.

"When the king is threatened by an opponent's piece, this is known as check."

And the last one is false because of the "thirty(?) move rule".

I went to see a crap musical called Chess. That was when I thought Abba was good. Actually I still do...i'm a dog called Dill...he he

Sorry Peter, the fourth one up is duly changed.
I feel like a fool's mate, or rather a mate's fool.

As for the last one, how about "So long as the king survives, the game will continue, unless one side resigns or the same move is repeated three times or 50 consecutive moves go by without a single piece being taken."

Much more accurate, but not quite so snappy.

DG you are correct. Thanks for a lovely blog, and welcome to you know what quite well.

Outstanding bit of writing, Mr Geezer.

Thanks to you both.

I was going to ask if there was a mutual admiration society we could all join, but that's clearly what blogworld's all about anyway...
