I cant help feeling that they would be perfect for a modern day Borstal.

Or designate them a work of art. I've seen worse stuff in galleries.

Good write up DG. There is a good section in the Museum in Docklands dedicated to the Maunsells.

Wasn't Sealand based here for a while as well? Or was that another set of sea forts?

dg writes: Sealand's from the same era, but it's off the coast of Suffolk (sort of Felixstowe-ish).

Fascinating. I had no idea that such things existed.

Fascinating bit of history, and another unique site to put on the "to see" list for some point in my life. Although, I have to say, they look like something out of Star Wars moreso than something out of a history text!

Love it! Thanks DG - I'd never heard or seen anything about this before. Super post, possibly one of my favourites from you!

Fascinating, as usual, D.G. It's a wonder these don't seem to be included in any wartime footage that I've ever seen.

And it seems amazing these structures have never made an appearance in Hollywood movies.

They look like they were designed for StarWars.

They are quite spooky looking, like something from the post-apocalyptic future (at least as depicted by The Movies).

Do the hosts still advise you to lean over the side of the boat an "feed the fishies" if you feel a bit sea sick?

dg writes: The sea wasn't really choppy enough for any fishie-feeding.

Ah thanks DG re Sealand.

I used to be assistant manager of a hotel on the seafront just up the road at Tankerton, and used to be able to see the sea forts on a clear day.

Never went up near them though

There's some cracking shots there.

I've been a bit of an anorak for years but I always thought these towers were a bit eerie.

It still seems a bit spooky listening to radio from the towers all these years down the line.
