I'd like to know...
• Are any Woolworths on this list not what I've said they are?
• What are the 'not sure' Woolworths now?
• Have I missed any London Woolworths out?

Woolworth in Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, is still empty.

I read this and thought "there was never a Woolworths in Blackheath". Googled it, and it seems there is another Blackheath in the Midlands!

When I went past Twickenham ex-Woolworth last week it was a "Bargain Shop", open and selling cheap goods.

My dad tells me the Woolworths on Preston Road, between Wembley and Kenton, is now a Tesco Express.

That branch wasn't on your list. Here it is in happier days:

The Leytonstone Woolworths is still empty but has been used for some community arts events. The Big Draw, Community art trail & a dance event.
Stuart

I pass (or stand outside) the Brixton one everyday, and 'not sure' is probably the best description. It appears to be a bazaar selling cheap clothes. Very unappealing window display and no permanent signage to indicate what it is

Dagenham branch is still empty.

I can confirm Carlbob's Dad, the Preston Road Woolies (which was particularly decrepid when it wasn't even closing down, is now a gleaming new Tesco Express.

As for my beloved Kingsbury branch. Well that remained empty for quite some time; but a couple of months ago it opened up as the second branch of an expanding Asian Fruit & Veg empire called "FruitAsia". Here's the before and here's the after

DG, you had me thinking for a few minutes where the Blackheath Woolies was - thanks for answering my question Susie. My guess would be that the Lee branch is still empty - it's a pretty desolate parade and I'd be surprised if anyone wanted to open a shop there.

Woolies in Ruislip Manor was transformed into a Wetherspoons probably 15 to 20 years ago. I'm not sure that merits it being included in a list of recently demised branches.

Last time I went past the Enfield Town Woolworths some months ago it was empty, and while it's not strictly speaking in Greater London, I hear that the Woolies in Waltham Cross is going to become a 99p store.

Enfield Town ex-Woolies now has a 99p store sign above it, although I'm not sure if it's open yet.

Morden has been included on your list twice. I *should* know what the North Cheam one became, but I'm having trouble remembering where exactly it was... I'll have to check when I next get back there.

Huge empty ex-Woolworths space in Colchester still vacant if anyone wants to try out their retailing skills outside of London. Potential for knocking it through to still-empty Zavvi next door if that space isn't enough.

Twickenham is a Clearance Shop and the one in Hounslow says Woolworths and is open but it sells mostly ex factory clothing and cheap stuff. Jackets for a fiver, type of stuff.

The Notting Hill branch on Portobello Road is now "Bello Market" selling, as far as I can tell, the same mishmash of stuff that Woolie's used to.

Woolies in Woking changed into Next
Woolies in addlestone is still empty
so is Woolies in Camberley. Not in London but very close,

Leytonstone's ex-Woolies is owned by the council. It was used as an arts centre over summer and again for one off events, and many in the community would love to see it stay as an arts centre. There have been various rumours about who would take it over (Wilkinsons? didn't want it. The council wanted Sainsburys, but it's too close to Tesco for their liking) but for now it's empty, although it has been tidied up a bit so the frontage is neat again.

The West Ealing ex-Woolworths is well on its way to becoming a Poundland. Because what we really need is another Poundland.

I think Lee is still empty. Will check it tonight.

Gives you 200 stores

Outside London, we all know that Woolies in Dorchester was cloned Jurassic Park-style into Wellworths.

Now, they're doing the same in Wokingham, where "Allworths" is due to open.

Woolworths in Addiscombe (Croydon suburb) is in the process of becoming a Sainsburys

Wembly high Road is still locked and shutterd. A particular shame as it was only refurbished a few years ago. A lot of Woolies branded merchandise has been croping up in the Poundstretcher down the road.

The store in South Woodford is now a food & drink store called 'International Supermarket'. There was quite a bit of fuss before it opened, including the obligatory facebook group in opposition, but I think it's been fairly successful.

Hello
Swiss Cottage Woolies = Still empty

Hmm....Edgware Road got Waitrose, Bow got Iceland :-(

London West End

Brixton Woolworths was turned into a "cheap shop" selling clothes, shoes, furniture, cheap jewellery, etc; it's now empty again and awaiting a more permanent tenant.

Sad sad day. I miss Woollies.
I had 3 within a 10 min walk of my house in London. One's an Iceland, one's a 99p shop and one's still empty.
And so is the Falmouth one, though an insurance type booth seems to have set up residence outside.

The one in Peckham is still empty, though some new boards went up only this week so someone is obviously doing something to it.
The local Poundstretcher here is selling off the stock too.

Hornchurch is a 99p store.

Enfield Town was a general discount store for some months but has now reopened as a "99p Store".

6pm update
• Blackheath deleted, Ruislip Manor deleted, one Morden deleted.
• Enfield Town to 99p store, Hornchurch to 99p store, Addiscombe to Sainsburys, Preston Road to Tesco, Kingsbury to FruitAsia, West Ealing to Poundland, South Woodford to international supermarket
• Now a bargain shop: Brixton (sort of), Hounslow, Notting Hill, Twickenham.
• Leytonstone now communal arty stuff
• Bermondsey, Peckham, Swiss Cottage and Wembley High Road still empty

A little beyond the border, my local Woolies (Walton-on-Thames) is now a Carpetright - but only after lying empty for a full ten months.

I was dismayed, in September last year, to find that the Islington Woolworths had shut. But it was only jumping the gun, as it turned out. Now it's Waitrose.

I know it doesn't count but, not being a Londoner, it's the only contribution I can make.

I have a correction for you DG. I went to the Lewisham Centre at the weekend (dreadful place incidently). and the Lewisham Woolies space is now an H&M (clothes store) and not a Poundland although one of those has also opened up there but not in the old Woolworth spot.
Cxx

Mrs Redboots is correct and I haven't been paying attention; there is in fact building rubble piling up on the floor in Brixton.

Wanstead one is still empty, all boarded up as if to be worked on, but I think the people of Wanstead have resisted the lure of Tesco's.

dg writes: alas, I don't think they have.

Hayes (Middx) is a 98 shop. Joy.

There was one in East Sheen that is now a Tesco Express, much to the disdain of the local residents

The Kingston Woolies will become a 'Clas Ohlson' store in December - not too sure what they will actually sell.

Redhill branch of Woollies to open as a Wilkinson's on 3rd December.

Kenton's Woolies on Streatfield Road is beginning to show signs of movement; a new shop front and shutter has been installed and the insides are being done up.

Word on the street is that it is going to be a shop full of electrical goodies; good job they have intalled new shutters then.

Although the name on the top of the door is still unknown, it should be done by the end of the year.

Yours
Curtain Twitcher, Stella Street...

As others have indicated, the shop at Lee, in the Leegate shopping centre, is still closed.
The Eltham one is confirmed as being a 99p store.
There used to be a Woolworths in Woolwich, but it moved out years ago. The marks of the Woolworths lettering are still visible on the red granite frontage, above the doors. It is now a Primark.

Went to Hounslow yesterday (20th Nov 09) and Woolworths store had reopened! had the Woolworth sign lit up and posters in the window saying store now open. It seems to be several franchise stall inside the store building.
