When I first moved to Tower Hamlets in 1989 the market was thriving with many varied an interesting shops and stalls, I would bring visitors from all over the world to sample a days shopping along the Roman, but alas these days I would never even dream of taking friends to see the Roman as its just full of tatty shops selling the same old rubbish, and you have to wade through piles of litter and rubbish just to see the rubbish being sold. Its day has gone, its dead.
I love history being brought to life like this.
I wish Mr Arber well in his retirement too. What a shame.
Sounds as if the rather rich history of the area was pretty well celebrated. And it's good that we have DG to spread the appreciation slightly more world-wide!
I think it's showing real promise again. It's got a lovely feel about the place with a mix of traditional, chain and newer independent shops and places to eat. I think the local society did a brilliant job in trying to get the community together, from potatoes at the pub to the events you mentioned. I remember being dragged around Roman Road market as a child - being forced to try on jeans while standing on pieces of cardboard - and while it's unlikely ever to see a return to that heyday there is still scope for more stalls and businesses of different varieties. One of the highlights of this week's calendar is a talk by the older generation who have lived here all their lives. That's important.
A most enjoyable post, and a welcome change from buses and tube trains :)
