The JamJar strikes again! What kind of jam? Strawberry?

DG, your description of your visit to Westminster Hall makes me feel sad at the way things have changed. When I decided to take a look at it, 50 years ago, there was no obvious security, no entrance fee, no hordes of tourists. You could wander through unchallenged, feeling you had a right to be there in *your* Parliament.

Great Aunt Annie, my Dad took me in there 50 yrs ago, as a nipper, just like you, but when I tried to take my daughter in there the policeman stopped us. Instead of hammer-beam it was grin n' bear it with a grimace. Progress, huh.

The original marble order for Westminster Cathdral arrived late, so had to be sold on the Victorian equivalent of Ebay. Norwich Union picked it up for a song and used it to furnish their head office. The resulting "Marble Hall" is magnificent and can still be viewed in Surrey Street, Norwich.

When I first saw the Cathedral, the marbling had hardly started and nearly all the interior was brick. Rather like an above ground catacombs perhaps, gloomy but magnificent. I hope they don't go any further now.
