I'm glad Rio got it! Congrats Brazil!! Nice to see the US bid crash and burn. Seems the Americans had the nerve to try to dissuade the panel on Brazil's bid, because the World Cup will be held in Brazil 2 years earlier. Seems the Yanks don't remember holding the world cup in '94... 2 years BEFORE the Atlanta games. Karma's a bitch!

Crikey, Jackal! You sound like the right wing radio chat show hosts I heard say that the vote for Rio was a vote against Obama. Chicago was an inferior venue, but "nice to see the US bid crash and burn"? Why is it that no one seems to get as upset about the US as the British?

agreed, tea girl! as an american who wanted the games to go to rio, i'm excited for the first south american olympics! i'm also not sure why everyone is focusing on obama, as the presidents of brazil and spain were also there pushing for their campaigns. most of my friends in chicago didn't want the games, and i don't blame them. plus, i can understand the ioc wanting more geographic diversity, and perhaps not having the olympics in two english-speaking cities in a row.

so, hooray for rio. hating on chicago and the u.s. is uncalled for, i think. but, some people will find any excuse.

I reckoned that Rio would win the bid from watching the midday news. Good news for Brazil, although they will have to tighten their security measures several hundred fold.

Great table, but to be fair, I'm not sure where in Africa one might hold the Winter Olympics.

Kilimanjaro?

1. I was not "hating" on the US. I was pointing out the hypocritical tactics the US contingent were using to try to sway votes into their favor. THAT's why I'm glad the US didn't get it. I have been to Chicago and found it to be a wonderful city with great people. But trying to point out fault with another city to boost your own, is unsporting at best.
2. I live in the US.
3. I voted FOR Obama.

Idle thought (as in, I'm too idle to do the legwork): if you added a column for "GDP", how much closer would it be to matching the "Total Games" percentages?

Congratulations Rio! It's interesting though that the 2016 Olympic Games will only be the third Olympiad to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, and the first games in the Southern Hemisphere to be held outside Australia.

GDP list (for Paul)

Europe 25\\%
North America 21\\%
Asia 38\\%
Australasia 1\\%
South America 11\\%
Africa 3\\%

Which is a bit closer but, perhaps surprisingly, not much closer.
