Where would DG get a bus from Durham to? Hmmm. I wonder if he might be a fellow Prefab Sprout fan - I was mildly excited to see buses with the destination of "Langley Park" (from where the route to Memphis begins...) last time I was in Durham - kind of wish I'd got one...
Beamish??
I was a student in Durham for three years. It's a lovely place. I would avoid going in the summer though as it's full of tourists
Aw that's a shame. It's the first time I can remember DG being foiled by the weather to such a degree.
Beamish occurred to me too, but as it's an Open Air Museum it's not at its best on a wet Wednesday.

But I don't think DG was foiled by the weather so much as the University calendar.

That's the trouble with Advance tickets - by the time you know what the weather is going to be the cheapest tickets have gone.

Perhaps you should have looked closer at hand. I'm with John Ruskin on which is England's best cathedral - you might have glimpsed it on the horizon when you were about half way to Durham.
Sounds a bit like Bath at this time of year. Except they all graduate near the end of the summer term. Or used to.
I hope you got on a bus to Beamish.

The weather isn't the issue, the University is. And it really takes over the city. It's a great University (I studied and worked there) but it dominates the whole city in a way outsiders really wouldn't expect.
And Andrew Bowden, I preferred it in the summer because it wasn't full of students ;)
As a former student who often stayed after the end of term, I too liked it when the students had gone! But students and tourists in June made a mad mix!
Darlo?
Durham's my home town. Granted it's not got the best range of tourist pulls if the big guns are out of commission, but I hope you can make it back for another visit when the crowds are diminshed (and the weather is brighter)!
Well DG my daughter lives in Durham and here are a few ideas from her for you to try on your next(pre-planned) visit.
Climb the Cathedral Tower for astounding views. Check times of opening beforehand.
The Oriental Museum has an amazing collection, especially the Egyptian collection, so make an effort to walk up the hill to view.
The University's modern art collection at the Palatine Centre is open for tours on Wednesdays at 2 pm, but must be pre-booked.
If you had been in Durham this weekend or next week it is the Book Festival with many interesting talks and events taking place.
Lumiere is in Durham in mid-November.
The Botanical Gardens (in good weather.
Enjoy your forthcoming visit in better weather hopefully, as that cannot be pre-arranged!
Shock horror. DG fails to do his research before going somewhere!
(and I do hope he doesn't go to Beamish to kill time; it deserves a whole day to itself as I found when I arrived at 10 and pretty much had to be thrown out at 6)
