This the England that I remember from the early 60's.

It's been ages since I went up to Southgate, so must try this particular walk now! By the way Sudbury Town tube station is extremely impressive. Also in art deco style, it has the further benefit of a "plaza" in front of it - which is bit like a large cul-de-sac ending at the end of what seems to be a very ordinary street of semi-detached houses. Quite a contrast that catches you by surprise. Best done by bus, Route 204.

Johns*t*on type, please DJ!

Hmmmm.....so the MDDAA think the Piccadilly Line serves Metroland???

Hurry up and visit the Royal Borough of Kingston,dg.
Arnos Park looked a bit wild and unkempt on a brief visit a few years ago..but probably good for wildlife.
Shame about those hideous replacement windows in Whitehouse Way. It can be done sympathetically.

Did you know that Dennis Hardy is the improbably titled Professor of Utopian History at the nearby Middlesex University? Do track down his books on 19th and 20th century utopias etc., e.g. Arcadia for All (british holiday camps)
Stimulating piece, and thanks for the reminder to visit MoDA,dg.

I actually did go to MoDA on your recommendation. Living in Enfield, and having been a student at Middlesex Uni I felt shamefaced not to have known about it until reading about it on these very pages.

Very nice it was, too.

I can confirm that milk floats do indeed visit the area, I've seen one. At four in the morning, no less.
