At the northern end of Hammersmith station (away from the ticket barriers) there is a seemingly pointless footbridge which connects the platforms together - why would you use this? to come into Hammersmith in one direction and then leave again?

no, because it's the old footbridge that used to link you to Hammersmith Grove Road station, which is now long gone ...
More:

- Westbourne Park station lies right alongside the National Rail line into Paddington, and at one time, British Rail services used to stop here.

- They used to stop at Royal Oak too (which had more platforms), but were removed when the built the underpass to allow tube trains to go under the mainline (Can you imagine H&C services holding up the Intercity 125's every few minutes today as they crossed the tracks?)

- Boris Gardeners video "I want to wakt up with you", was also filmed at Westbourne Park, back when it had Met trains. Tube geekery in pop video format. Go Youtube it.

errr, that's it. i'm out.
Carter USM namechecks the line in Lean On Me (I Won't Fall Over).

You'd use it when you walked all the way to the front of the train and then it suddenly departed while you were not concentrating.
Does the footbrige give staff access to the depot as well?

The Hammersmith & City name was originally given to the section between Westbourne Park and Hammersmith when it opened as a branch of the Great Western Railway. The Metropolitan bought a share in it early in its existence, and finally took full ownership when the main line railways were nationalised in 1948.
In the early days there was a connection to what is now the Picadilly and District lines west of Hammersmith, but was then the London and South Western Railway (part of the viaduct is still visible from trains on those lines) allowing Metropolitan trains to run to Richmond. The connection closed in 1910.
Outside Hammersmith H&C station, there used to be a subway going UNDER the road to take you into the Dist/Picc station, but it's also since been blocked up and filled in. You can still spot on the surface on the north side where it used to be though. That would have been dead handy to have kept that instead of having to brave your live on the double crossing...
I was on a (so - called) new S stock train on the Hammersmith and City today (thinking about dg's blog) and they still had the maps for the Olympics with all the magenta venue signs (a period piece!). I don't think these train ever went as far as West Ham during the Olympics anyway.
