Barbican is one of two stations whose name contains the name of a brand of lager. (The other... is left as an exercise for the reader.)
|
I'm going to presume you don't mean any of the products of the Camden Brewery here, so instead I'll go with "Victoria Bitter". Which, despite the name, is an Australian lager.
|
Why despite its name? Victoria is a state in Australia.
More confusing is an excellent book called "Victorian Cities" in which the author, Asa Briggs, describes various cities that developed in Victorian times and had a Victorian ethos - Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham etc. One of the cities described is Adelaide which is of course in the state of South Australia and not Victoria. |
Pedantic - you focussed on the wrong bit of the name :) ]
I was going for the fact that it's a lager that has "Bitter" in the name. Think the cans say something like "Lager Bitter" for good measure. |
what about the one that goes wrong if you "drink it warm, mate ?"
|
Assuming it's not Maida Vale, I'm going to plump for a pint of St Pauli.

Off topic but I'm sure you've heard that Tubby Isaacs' stall closes forever today. Just saw it on the news. http://spitalfieldslife.com/2013/06/13/so-long-tubby-isaacs-jellied-eel-stall/

Oxxxxford Circus?

It's a terrible shame that the roof is gone, but I think Sir John was being just a bit too over dramatic. But I suppose that was his job.
On the other hand one aspect of the station has actually improved since that picture: there are no longer adverts covering up those alcoves praised here. Imagine the uproar if the adverts had been introduced over this period rather than taken away! |
I'm Guessing 18 could be down to need for signage in the event of a train stopping on the platform to be evacuated.
|
I actually guess it's just there for health and safety as a train would not stop there but TfL probably have their reasons.
|
Train will definitely not stop there at the minute - there's fences on each end!
Although there's rumours that the tracks will be used as sidings once the Crossrail work has been completed. |
Great post , DG. Here are a few bits of historic information/pics on Aldersgate/Barbican station, on the Barbican Residents' messageboard.
http://www.barbicantalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10560 The alignment between Barbican and Moorgate under the estate is build in a single concrete box tunnel. This has the unfortunate effect in my last-but-one flat in Defoe House (above that tunnel) that whenever a Thameslink train rumbled underneath, there would be a slight but very detectable tremor for anyone who lived with it. Also interesting to note that all long leaseholders on the estate have been contacted re: potential subsidence issues due to crossrail tunnelling... concrete isn't very good at flexing slightly. |
