Was wondering how to get a random number...then of course I clicked. And how funny it was when the random (bus) number I got happens to be the bus route I most often use! Oh well
What's always puzzled me about West Wickham is the fact there isn't a Wickham or East Wickham nearby (I know there's an East Wickham in Bexley, but that's about 9 miles away)
"it was indeed possible to hate them a little more" - hilarious !
Having recently London Looped in that area it was a nice reminder of warmer and drier days!

So how do you get a random number? New jam-jar?
Oh! Just clicked too! :)
Penge even got a mention from David Bowie (R.I.P) in his song 'Did You Ever Have A Dream'
Random journey, random fact. 194 was the AM frequency of Capital Radio. I can still hear the jingle.
Some cherries flower in the winter anyway: https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/94025/i-Prunus-i-times;-i-subhirtella-i-Autumnalis-Rosea/Details
A pedant strikes: "194 was the AM frequency of Capital Radio".

Wavelength, Running Correspondent. It was 194 metres.

Frequencies are measured in hertz. A wavelength of 194 m is equivalent to a frequency of 1548 kHz
cf @Grumpy anon, me too. I tried the random number generator and got a bus route number that just happens to pass near enough my doorstop.
Tried the random number generator, got 483. Awkward...

I've tried a bit of all of them though.
Shirley...you can't be serious?
Surely Shirley is a suburb with a Big Daddy's name?
Yes,DG,you're right. It is quicker to get off at East Croydon and walk. I once sat on the 194 at those lights and saw eight minutes disappear. Luckily as a freedom pass holder I can change to the tram at Sandilands and sail through. Very good post,I enjoyed seeing one of our local bus routes through other eyes.😉
It seems like everyone's popping round my town today! If you've heard of Techniquest (proper train spotter type) he popped round here today, and so have you on the 194.
Abbots Way. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

If you thought the 194 went round the houses, try the 358...
You went past my old school!

Trinity School used to be in central Croydon (where the Whigift Centre is now), and I went there for my first two years of secondary education. It moved to Shirley Park in 1965 and I spent the rest of my school days there.

Best bits about the new school were the swimming pool, the squash courts and the library. It also had an underground parade square and an indoor rifle range for use by the Combined Cadet Force.
I spent part of my childhood in West Wickham and travelled by bus to Croydon many times. Apart from the advent of the team it doesn't sound like it has changed much in the intervening 27 years.
Yep that sounds like a decent summary of route 194. I did it end to end in the latter half of last year but on a weekday afternoon. I avoided the Sydenham traffic but caught "school tip out" time as we got to Shrublands and Shirley. School kids appeared out of the middle of nowhere and we were soon pretty full on the way into Croydon. And yes getting through that junction in Central Croydon was just as hellish. The journey did "colour in" a few bits of London I'd never been to / seen before so it was useful from that perspective as well as ticking off another route on my quest to ride every London bus route.
You can watch a video of the route here. It is going the other way from the commentary, from West Croydon towards Sydenham. It is shown speeded up, slow it to 1/2 speed if you want, using settings.
