To be fair, the British Museum have the expertise to look after the chessmen properly, and frequently lend them out to other places around the world. They are set up to do this, and can ensure that they are properly shipped, displayed and returned, which smaller museums just couldn't do as effectively.

Who says that black chess pieces are traditional? See "Alice Through The Looking Glass", where the chess pieces are definitely White v Red. And I distinctly remember seeing a couple of Old-Masterish paintings somewhere of chess players White v Red rather than White v Black.
