Seems a shame that they had to bulldoze and concrete over large swathes of the Lower Lea Valley, just to recreate it inside the stadium. So, is that an iconic opening ceremony or ironic?
If memory serves me, didn't Sydney have Kylie & Savage Garden (then, Australia's biggest group du jour) performing at their Closing Ceremony.

Seem to remember it being a big success, because of all the 'theatre' around them. Who knows, it might be done again.
I went up to the south side of the Thames, at the weekend, after hearing that helicopters would be flying along the river for "a film," including flying through Tower Bridge.
I set myself up by Butler's Wharf, and later a professional film unit and crew took position just a few feet away.
Every now and then a guy would come by to check they were OK, and take a look through their viewfinder to make sure the angles were right.
I thought I knew his face, but couldn't quite place it. It was Danny Boyle.
Apparently that filming was to do with the opening ceremony. (There are some of my pics of the helicopters on Flickr)
I'm one of the volunteer cast for the Olympics Opening Ceremony and I'm proud to say I've told no-one about the creative plans for my section. I'm not in the part that was revealed this week but we see them rehearsing (minus the animals). I've been impressed how well we've done keeping a secret with so many people involved.

When we move to the Olympic Stadium next week for rehearsals I expect more helicopters to come by to get the aerial shots as it'll all created to look good on telly, and from above.
Hah! I've been making jokes that in place of the spectacle that opened the Olympics in Beijing that London would counter with Morris dancing. And in fact, I might be right!
