Just to be clear...

monthly (adjective)
Happening once every month

That's ONCE a month.
Sorry, I don't know of any, but I was really excited to read about the Ragged School Museum. If anyone knows of any museums devoted to children, childhood, orphanages, workhouses, juvenile justice, youth, young people, scouting or guiding, youth work, education, factory acts, etc. in the Industrial Revolution / Victorian / Edwardian periods I'd love to know about them. I've already been to The Museum of Childhood, but I wasn't impressed, I have to say. FWIW, I teach this stuff and am thus intrigued!
Brilliant round-up, DG. Thanks.

How about the Whitewebbs Museum of Transport? Once a month on Sundays.

My report here.

The Kirkaldy Museum is also open on the Saturday from 10 til 4.
Just to live up to my name...

Shirley Windmill is a Tower Mill as is obvious by a visit or a picture of it. It is true that it is situated in Postmill Close (recent house builder creation) but that refers to a earlier post mill on the same site.

Bit like Tramway Path, Mitcham, by the tram stop which is actually named after an early tramway and not the current one having substantially pre-dated Tramlink.
Antipodean - try the Ragged School Museum, which co-incidentally features on DG's list today.

Even more restricted as it's April to October only:

Orpington Roman Villa:

It's a marginal one I know, but it gets very little publicity and is very conveniently located...

dg writes: Also open Wednesdays and Fridays.
But I really liked it. My report here.

How about Little Holland House, Carshalton Beeches (SM5). Open 1.30pm to 5.30pm on the first Sunday of each month (plus Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday but not Christmas and New Year).

dg writes: Thanks, that's gone in. And it's lovely.
My report here.

>>No Brighton, no Birmingham, no Belfast.

So that'll mean no Boxted either. Ah, well.

the Science Museum monthly late night is adults only, so the grownups have a chance to play with all the interactive exhibits, also a silent disco, comedy, special tours and much more.
But anyway, an intriguing criterion with which to compile such a list, DG. At the risk of testing your patience by going ever so slightly off-topic, I'd also be curious to see a blog entry devoted to those museums that you can only visit by prior appointment.

Here are three examples that I don't recall you having written about:
http://www.thamespolicemuseum.org.uk/museum.html
http://www.royalballetschool.org.uk/the-school/museum/visitor-information/
http://www.cinemamuseum.org.uk/visit/
Amersham Fair Organ Museum http://www.fairorganmuseum.org.uk/. One Sunday a month, but only November to March, so put a reminder in your calendar (I think the organs venture out to Steam Rallies and the like when the weather improves). The organs play in turn, plus tea and home-made cakes. Bliss!

dg writes: Blimey, that looks a treat.
I'd put it in, except a) there's no pattern to the dates, b) no future dates are listed.

And I would have thought that The Crafty Sewer might have been something to do with the network of underground pipes that deal with our effluent.

It just goes to show that I don't know much about Sewing Machines !
I'm hoping to make it to the Foulness Heritage Centre for the 1st Sunday of May.
Hi DG - how about Mortimer Terrace nature reserve in Kentish Town? Open first sunday of each month

http://www.wildlifetrusts.org/reserves/mortimer-terrace
The Clown Museum in Hackney is open from 12-5 on the first Friday of the month http://apps.hackney.gov.uk/servapps/CommunityDirectories/Details.aspx?OrgID=2820

How about this, my borough's oldest building?

www.ilfordhospitalchapel.co.uk

Despite having lived in E18 for the last 14 years, I'm slightly ashamed to say I've never visited. Maybe I'll rectify that this Saturday.
