Not in a post about pedestrians, no, obviously.
I jumped the red light. Sorry.
Some of the crossings on Bow Road were retimed prior to the Olympics to give a faster motor traffic flow but seem to have never been reverted back post-2012. No wonder we take a chance...
The junction at Deptford Bridge (where the very busy New Cross Road crosses Deptford Church St) used to be relatively pedestrian-friendly. At some time in the last 4 years - not sure when exactly as I 'm not there much - priorities have been changed, making it very difficult to cross North-South (or vice versa). I bet this was heralded as a triumph for speeding up road traffic.
Quite right if there is a proper crossing with pedestrian lights. However, outside the capital there are plenty of junctions where the authority has envisaged pedestrians crossing - there are blind bobbles and white lines across the road - and yet no actual lights or time for those on foot. This leaves us with having to guess the traffic sequence and wait for gaps to dash across.
The other issue is that sometimes "improvements" make things far worse. The main road nearest me was remodelled last year to give wider pavements, accessible bus stops and speed humps with one having a zebra crossing on it.

The net result is that the level zebra crossing means people treat it as an extension of the pavement and simply step out causing drivers to jam their brakes on. Worse you could previously cross half way, away from from the crossing, and await a gap. This is relevant if you want to catch the bus to the station. Now the traffic is either too fast or too slow and narrower lanes make it impossible to wait safely half way across. Also the narrower road lanes mean that any vehicle turning across the traffic flow or a bus stopping at the stop causes a massive jam of traffic. The whole thing is an utter mess and it now takes minutes to cross the road whereas before it was possible to get across quickly in most circumstances. I'm glad I no longer have the early morning dash to the bus to start a commute - I'd probably miss the bus more times than I'd catch it.
