Sounds like fun, DG, and infinitely preferable to the crush on the Embankment.

Sometimes the unlikely spots are the best vantage points. I watched the Sydney fireworks from a rather spooky dark laneway, in the company of about half a dozen English, Czech and Korean tourists, none of whom I actually knew. I had as good a view as the sardines packed around the Harbour itself would have had, and - like you - I had a much quicker trip home afterwards.

Happy New Year to you.

I rather like this idea. Maybe I'll see you up there for 2010.

All the best for the coming year, dg!

I was on lambeth bridge. It wasn't crammed, i had a fantastic view of the thames, big ben, the wheel, and the fireworks, and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Oh.. and at 12.15, walked straight to Elephant & Castle tube - no fuss, no queues, hopped onto a mostly empty Northern Line train and came back without any hassle. New Year in central London *can* be done!

Happy New Year, DG! You deserve a great one, in return for all the great posts you give us - thanks!

Happy new year DG, I've loved the journey with you this past few months

They didn't have enough rockets this year. We can't see the river-level stuff (Pimlico 8th floor, but too much in the way), all we can see is what comes off the eye, and the high-altitude stuff, so we were a bit disappointed.

But happy new year anyway!

The top of Canonbie Road in Forest Hill, SE23 provides a similar view for those from South London

Belated Happy New Year Mr Geezer - thanks so much for making my first year in London less than typical with your excellent exploration tips.

The middle of Richmond Park is another excellent, if slightly more distant, place to see all the displays in London simultaneously. A merry group of locals gathers there every year with sparklers. Very civilised. (No fireworks allowed in the park!)

You hear all the south London displays too. At the stroke of midnight, all London seems to be exploding around you.
