Arriving early is good advice, although it would be a bit of a pain if everyone did it. I slightly disagree with you about the planning thing. One of the things I'm most pleased about this year is the reduction in the number of places where you have to book in advance. I like to go to a particular part of London with some visits clearly in mind, but also allowing myself to be sidetracked if somewhere interesting is open and there's no queue (the Argentinian ambassador's residence near Belgrave Square the other year or the ruins of a church at Spitalfields last, for example). Too much planning and rushing spoils things a bit, I think
Sadly this weekend clashes with far too many things, but that's not stopped me getting two bookings in:
- Stratford Market Depot (Jubilee Line)
- One Canada Square (Canary Wharf Tower)

Do I wish I could do more? Of course.
Am I happy with my lot? Yep.
The Open House website is currently showing a useful map of the 854 properties. 853 of them are in London, but the Sobell Leisure Centre is off the coast of Somalia. Change at Mogadishu for a fast boat and watch out for pirates.
Well done getting a booking at One Canada Square, Jordan: it was full up when I tried, not very long after bookings opened. But I managed to get the Government Art Collection :) The exhibitions at the Whitechapel gallery in 2011-12 were interesting, so I am looking forward to seeing the HQ.
I planned what I was going to when I first got the booklet, but later realised that there's planned engineeering work on the Central line all weekend. this means probably an extra hour on my journey to and from Central London, and then there'll be lots of waiting in queues, so this year I'll look at local attractions. ther's always next year, TfL permitting.
Harrow missed out on inclusion in Open House this year - officially for cost cutting reasons, but I suspect it fell victim to council politics and a split in the ruling group...

Instead, the openings are going ahead under the banner of "Harrow Open Doors" - details at http://www.harrow.gov.uk/news/article/77/harrow_opens_doors_to_historic_buildings
I shall be stewarding at Swakeleys today and Battersea tomorrow.

Battersea will be able to have a couple of hundred inside the turbine hall at a time and there is also a large space just outside the building before you go in so you can stare at it a good while beforehand.

They will have a refreshments van for the waiting hungry. It will be crowded but hopefully bearable.
What is up with the app? No pins on the map, "connection error" on the listings. Useless.
Thanks you for the link Stephen Bird. I was disappointed to think Harrow wasn't taking part.
There's a BBC article appeared - "Open House London: The 'Mad' idea that went global"

What would I do without DG? Until I read this article I thought Open House was last weekend. As it was , I enjoyed a speedy ascent and descent of the Gherkin and a thoroughly interesting walk along the soon-to-be trackbed of the Canary Wharf Crossrail station - topped off with six hours chatting to pleasant people in the respective queues. So, thanks for the invaluable heads-up.
The Open House app was working again on Sunday. Anyone know what went wrong on Saturday? A couple of people I spoke to also had a problem getting it to work.

It was Heritage Open Days last weekend - different but similar - http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/
