But Euston Square DOES boast one of only two complete sets of 1950s-70s LT platform name frieze enamel signs
left on the Underground.
Euston Square station may lack visual charm, but the last time I was there (2010?) there was very pleasant classical music being played over its public address system - and not an over-familiar piece either, but a gentle string quartet.

Actually you are wrong in saying Euston Square is down outside Euston mainline.

There used to be a Euston Square, but it was renamed after a murder in May 1879 made property in the area hard to sell. I think it was renamed Endsliegh Street etc.

I remember hearing a programme about this on the radio a long time ago, and havign lived around the area for a year while a student logged it away int eh back of my mind.
From 1860s and 1870s maps, you're right that Euston Square did once extend south to what is now Endsleigh Gardens, but it never extended beyond Gordon Street. The station entrance has always been on the corner of Gower Street, 150m to the west.
If you missed it ...

Euston Square is a miserable dump. Shame really. What were they thinking with those grey tiles?
The tunnel mouth is nice, if you squint a bit.
"functional but not unpleasant" is how I'd describe Euston Square station - although it's a station I've used far more often to arrive at than leave from, perhaps meaning I've not spent masses of time there

@KIm - That's interesting. I'm also intrigued as to what the other station might be. They were once so ubiquitous (and to be honest, so overlooked as unremarkable and not astoundingly attractive, as they aren't), but now...they aren't. Can't even guess what the other survivor might be...
I think there is a plaque somewhere in the station saying that Euston Square once won station of the year. Or maybe I'm imagining it.

It seems I'm alone in finding Euston Square to be not too unpleasant a station at all, but my initiation to the tube in my early years was through the prism of the NE end of the Victoria Line, so the bar probably isn't set too high!
Euston Square station is fine - functional, not unpleasant, clean. Suits me.

Moreover it's an oasis of calm when arriving into Euston, particularly on a chaotic Sunday afternoon (especially if hungover from a weekend away in the Midlands) - rather than fight through the crowds down the escalators to the Vic/Northern platforms at Euston, I prefer to stroll the very short distance to Euston Square for my onward journey.
