So a serviceman in HM Forces could make a big jump from elite class to underclass if he leaves the forces and possibly becomes unemployed.
Absolutely superb! Terrifyingly close to the mark...
Where is the intelligensia?
Wot no "hardworking families" (which was trotted out in the news again last night. (nice post DG).
What if you fall into more than one class. eg. I am in at least 4 of those categories
I'm just waiting in trepidation for a comment from Blue Witch...
Intelligentsia? Right down there with students, I should think. We can't have people wasting their time thinking when they could be working, can we?
And what was it that you were trepidating that I'd be saying Baldassaro?
Stick to travelogues.
Satire once again terrifyingly close to the mark DG. I'll be sharing this with colleagues and friends.
Don't stick to 'travelogues'. What? You were going to make up your own mind what to publish?

Excellent stuff.
Lovely Jubbly. A great seasoning to the travelogues. Keep it up!
Overkill. We don't need all this. There are three things we need to do to make Britain 'great' again.

1. Block immigrants and asylum seekers from coming into Britain, and send all them home. This is because tons of them come over here, take OUR jobs and leave lots of British people unemployed, claiming benefits and costing Britain billions. Obviously, we can't kick all of them out, and some of them do contribute massively. They need to be assessed on a ranking system based on two points, a) how close their country is to Britain and b) what they do (i.e. benefit scrounger with 10 kids before hardworking family).

2. Get out of the EU and tell all of the bastards to piss off. They introduce stupid laws that help the French and the Eastern Europeans, while screwing us. We need to stop before we're all rammed in Britain like sardines with Eastern Europeans and we're using the euro.

3. Kill/exile Boris Johnson. He's slowly rising in power and if we don't stop him soon, it'll be too late. He'll be in charge of the country and where would we be then? 5 years of the big blond smile while actually not doing anything.
Another classic, DG!
Courier, ecch!
Brilliantly observed! I don't know quite how they intend to win support from those voters in what used to be called 'the working class'.
Rotherhithe's comment is a masterclass in Poe's Law.
What no "stay at home mothers who...er actually quite like to stay at home and raise their families in a loving stable environment." and no "working mothers/single parents who juggle having and family and work... but leave their children in daycare to become unsocialised trouble makers, but need all the tax credits etc" Not that i'm bitter or anything....
@Sarah ... ouchie, that hurt, even if I don't have any loans (lucky me), mainly because that is the way so many students seem to think.
Rotherhithe, the BNP website is thataway ---->
What swirlythingy said.

lol, sideways smiley face etc.
Absolutely splendid.

Of course we are all in it..together.
I literally can't tell whether Rotherhithe's comment is satirical or not.
Careful! What starts as satire can end up as policy.
@Kerry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe's_law
Trust me, (possibly with the exception of number 3) this ain't satire. The EU impose laws which don't benefit us. It isn't Westminster who rule the country any more, it's Brussels and Strasbourg.

If you're an asylum seeker, what was wrong with stopping in Germany or France? If you're an immigrant, are you here to work or leech of the benefit system. Maybe start an aptitude test to see if you are capable of earning a living. If you're not, go back home. It's an easy living now. Every week you go watch the football, then sit on the sofa and do nothing. Then go down to the bank and receive another few hundred quid out of MY TAXES!!!

To be honest, I think we're too far broken now. We can't go back, its just gonna get worse and worse. I'm lucky, I got a good education, and now I've got a job where I earn a fair amount of money. But I look at some of the people I knew ten years ago in my school days, shut up in a council flat in Peckham with no intention of doing anything.
Surely judges should be in their own part of the Elite class, along with all the top people of the legal profession.

And shouldn't there be another section of the Elite Class, the Liberal Elite, e.g. BBC Executives, Museum and other Artistic Directors (like Serota), Newspaper Editors like Rusbridger.

Footballers and managers are part of the new Elite class now, RE the wall to wall coverage of Fergie

I would also argue about the Immigrant categorisation, seeing that many of them are professionals, bankers or non dom billionaires...
When I was a child I used to puzzle over why a particular section of society was called the working class, when I could see that just about everyone did some sort of work.
Is anyone called working class these days?
Thursday's CIF article in the Guardian has answered my question. I'm still puzzled.
Where can we place "celebs"? And "newspaper owners"?

Mikey: to this government and the newspapers, an immigrant is an immigrant and therefore bad (unless owning a newspaper . . )
We are not all the same. Why do you want us to be?

(I'm with David)
I have been reading this blog for a number of years and thought I'd show my appreciation via the comments sections. Wonderful post DG, please do keep them coming.
Just in case Rotherhithe is still reading, non-EU immigrants have a stamp in their passport saying "No recourse to public funds", i.e. no benefits or council houses. Illegal immigrants don't get anything either - 'cos of being illegal. Ayslum seekers are different and the UK has various international - not EU - obligations about them.
