The siege is tomorrow? Better warn the police ... |
One of the blocks in the council estate is called Siege House. It looks like the kind of place where one would be held. http://homes.trovit.co.uk/siege-house-sidney-street-e1 |
If you look closely in the dying seconds of the newsreel, the crowd scenes, you can see bystanders waving at the camera. The original "hello mum" moment? |
Good fictional re-creation of the siege in Emanuel Litvinoff's A Death Out of Season. Might be difficult to find. |
OK, so now you changed it my comment looks weird ha ha. |
Could you imagine bystanders being allowed to loiter so close to the action, or people leaning out of windows next to buildings under seige/on fire etc, today! |
Now this is very local history indeed, seeing as I spent a chunk of my childhood living on Sidney St and attending the nearby school, so I certainly intend to pop along to the exhibition some time... In fact both schools I went to as a child are on famous East End streets (Sidney and Cable). |
Just this minute finished watching Pool of London "The story of the River Underworld" and been trying to see if I can see locations on steeetview! |
