It baffles be that we are still using these systems, Local Backup, lack of cloud synchronised system settings and password database.
A good example for a sort of alternative(it's not) would be Android system backup which has most settings persistent after device change and if you are using chrome(I know) you only need two passwords ever. Device change takes ten minutes.

Doesn't help you. Why is this still considered normal, is the question.
I think you use Firefox, you could have exported many of your passwords to the new machine, assuming you had saved them on the old one. I also have my passwords written down in a book which keep in a secure place. Any that are to do with banking are not saved on the PC and I keep them in the book written in a code that only I know.
You know doubt have Windows 8.1 and will be getting Windows 10 at the end of this month.
You can install Classic Shell (free) to make you Windows 8.1 desktop appear as Windows 7(or XP).
As you now have two working machines network them together and share folders on the old machine to make for easy transfer/copy to the new one. I have 5 PC's and they are all on the same network.
Markifi, Firefox does also have a synching option to send your browser settings automatically onto a new machine, it does not seem to work as well as Chrome, which syncs settings between PC machines very well, (and also to Android systems).
You can export your passwords from Firefox and also your bookmarks, it is quick and easy to do.
I do have Firefox but the 'Sync' doesn't seem to be working.

I don't have Windows 8, I have 7 :)
Switching email isn't too bad for anyone using Thunderbird - find folder where it is all stored, copy to external backup drive, install Tbird on new machine, copy backup to appropriate folder.
Hmmm, Portsmouth and Chichester?

BTW - for total ease of startup etc, get a Mac. Yes, I know they are more expensive but, at least up until now, they have also been much easier to use and much better looking! (As if that really matters.)
Mac vs Pc. Macs work straight out of the box. True in 2006, still true today.

Charles, I bought a new pc laptop 3 weeks ago, and it certainly worked straight out the box and would perform most routine tasks. I did spend some time installing additional programs that I use.
If I had an Apple Mac I would have expected the same as the programs I use do not come bundled with either Mac or Windows systems
It is good that we have a choice, Apple, Linux, Android and Windows etc, just use the system you like after trying them, I like Windows, Linux and Android in that order but have never enjoyed using a Mac but I appreciate the fact that some people do.
Is it just me...or is the third photo a nod to the "Little Britain" television series?
A couple of years ago my work issued me with a brand new, out-the-box Windows 7 laptop. I spent most of a day installing Windows updates and removing shovelware.

The next morning I spilt a mug of tea on it.
