Well. you can always nip into Smiths and check out page 36. You certainly don't want to miss a sausage challenge, and I don't want to miss reading about it here.

"I don't want people buying the magazine just because it tells them what's on at the cinema at the weekend," ... Sounds like his next move will be to change the title, current one being all a bit limiting and closely defining. "Time"? Think someone else might have that. "Out"? Better, but probably also taken. "Out Time"? Not snappy enough. "No Time"? On the right track.

yeah i've cancelled my subscription, with a heavy heart, bt i just found there's nothing much to READ in it now - i used to enjoy atually reading it on my way to work on the tube - and the wrap-around exra front cover beer advert really annoyed me. Why pay when i can get listings for free?

The people at Smoke magazine used to take rather a different view of "the splendid Big Smoke section", since they thought lots of it plagiarised them without acknowledgement

The ONLY time I've bought Time Out is to get a list of what's on, where, when, and a brief 'what's it about'. I don't want any crap magazine full of filler and advertisements - there are stacks of them already. TO can PO

OK, so the web doesn't provide the detail or convenience that the printed page affords

Really? I gave up on Time Out because the listings blurbs were too short and useless and you had to look stuff up online anyway to get all the details.

"a cunning way of raising profit without raising the cover price"

Or, of course, reducing losses caused by hordes cancelling their subs.

I could not agree more, and I'm relieved to see I'm not the only one being seriously disappointed by nu-Time Out!
I remember when, not that long ago, I paid £2.25 for a chunkier and much more interesting magazine.
It doesn't carry the London spirit for me anymore. Sad.

Well said. I cancelled my sub a few days ago. Their relaunch issue was a celebration of New York, for Dickens' sake! Still, I'll keep reading the Big Smoke blog, which remains interesting.

all paper-printed media is slowly dying... especially if Time Out becomes Heat 2. oh dear. i never liked Frith.

Is TO as good as it used to be?.. Probably not. But.. I would miss it, for sure. It should be supported. It does need to go online fully though. (they sent a link to subscribers for this week's edition online in-case the paper copy had been delayed in the post)

Ham: Given the commercial direction Time Out seems to be taking, they could probably rename it to 'Tout'.

Ummm...

So the thing with your new newsvendor never really worked out???

'pepping up the listings with a few more bulky features'? There are no listings and there are no features. The decision to get rid of Big Smoke, like you say, was ridiculous! Now instead of a feature or Big Smoke they open with a two page ticket ad for themselves!

I cancelled my subscription this time last year when they got rid of their excellent sport section and cut the clubbing section in half. I miss it, but not in its present format. I have the occassional flick-through in the local newsagents, but it seems to be getting less and less in the listings!

Mark Frith seems to be de-Londonising Time Out, removing its USP. Having taken away the excellent Big Smoke section and cut the page count by a third, Time Out now says absolutely nothing about living in the greatest city in the world. Boo.

Having given it up about 10 years ago I have to say I haven't missed it. Occasionally (about once I year?) I buy it, only to remember why I stopped buying it in the first place.
