Thanks for that excellent post DG. Will definitely do this walk in the near future.
the new Ordnance Survey app is great, download the map to your phone in advance, and the app shows you precisely where you are. No signal needed.
We did this section over 2 consecutive months last year and, despite our intrepid leader having done a reccy a few weeks earlier, we still repeatedly got lost!
Fact fans might be interested to know that the young girl WS Gilbert died trying to save went on to become the second wife of artist Stanley Spencer.

She doesn't seem to have been a particularly pleasant person if her Wikipedia article is anything to go by.

Thanks for this. I was about to do this section next and it's good to know it's not just me being dumb missing the signs but that they are sadly lacking on some routes. Looks worth it though
Not well signposted in places. From DG's description, it's a leg worth doing in the summer, as in the winter instead of meadows and fields of wheat, it's just boggy grass and mud!
The signposting seems a bit better, though not around Grim’s Dyke or on the final golf course. It is certainly a test of one’s boots - the Middlesex Clay.
