To complete the list I still need to know the number of stairs down at Lambeth North. Anyone? And does that complete the list?

That's... embarassing! Why have I missed Lambeth North out? I've got a note of that somewhere, umm... let me go and dig it out.

You're also missing the spiral staircase by the lifts to the Northern Line at Bank.

(and possibly Tottenham Court Road if the stairs haven't been obliterated by Crossrail)

I think DG's list is only where there are steps as an alternative for lifts. Stations which have escalators (such as Bank) as well as steps aren't mentioned. But as it is, Bank does have a staircase - but not a spiral one - of 128 steps, which aren't that well known about.

One of the smug joys of living in Chalk Farm is heading up the stairs (it takes seconds) while non-locals queue for the lifts (it takes minutes).

My recollection of Lambeth North is 99 stairs.
Or thereabouts. Not so many that it is unbearable to walk up or down them, anyway. Unlike, say, Russell Square

101 in total, in fact. (17+64+17) at Lambeth North. My memory is almost correct then...

99 rings a bell. I think it is the number on the warning message at the bottom discouraging you from using them. Still often worth using when going down though.

@dominic, From the Direct Enquiries website, how did you manage to route down/acesss that information that you have? I can never figure the website out! (which makes it, er... not very accessbale...)

Old st - 100 exactly - says the sign
To the Rail platforms 'Trains to Welwyn' - [also Stevenage, Hertford, etc]

The Northern line platforms are a few steps further

At Finsbury Park, 2 spiral staircases give direct access from Network Rail, while straight stairs go from the long subway connecting with the outside world. I just counted 51 steps on the spiral down to the southbound Piccadilly and Victoria platforms, but 54 to the northbound ones.

I've been down (and up!) the 193-step spiral staircase at Covent Garden many times. I'm surprised that there are two stairways on the tube that are longer than it. I wouldn't want to walk up the 320 steps at Hampstead, that's for sure!

The staircase at Hampstead has 9 more steps than the Monument's 311 (the stone pillar I mean not the station) and that killed me when I went up it. I definitely wouldn't want to use Hampstead's staircase unless I really had to.

If you visit at the right time you get a nice certificate after ascending (and descending) The Monument. Perhaps TFL could issue a 320 Certificate to all fitness types who successfully ascend the Hampstead staircase (doctor's certificate to those who fail).

Lambeth North:

The DirectEnquiries website has it right... sort of.

There are indeed 84 steps on the 'emgergency' spiral staircase, but then here are two further staircases to take you down to each platform - get this, they're different.

Number of steps on the northbound side up to the lift level is 17, but on the soundbound side there are 20. Is this important? Dunno. Could be. Does this happen a lot? Yes.. as DG will confirm for his local station (Bow Road) there are 30 steps on one side, and 32 on the other.

Will this prompt everyone to count the number of steps on BOTH sides of their regular commute tube platform? I would love it if it were so...

That's a surprising difference between 2 neighbouring stations Queensway (123) and Lancaster Gate (78) when the land at surface level is completely flat. It's not noticeable, but the Central Line must have quite a steep climb here.

Ahem! Speaking as a proud veteran of last year's opening, I think you might be missing some statistics for Aldwych...?

I'd like to know though how many of those 160 stairs are on the spiral staircase down to 'lift level' and how many are then the steps up from the platform to lift level. DG's quotes are for the numbers in the spiral staircases only.
