How exciting. Never been before, but heard about fine High Street. Might go tomorrow and try out new bike.

Whatever next? Petworth? Although no rail service, worth the effort. Fine book shop too, but Petworth Park is wonderful.

At my local (London suburbs)cafe , at the moment, they do a free bacon roll with your hot drink. So hot chocolate plus bacon roll for £1.95 is pretty good too.

A mile or two south of East Grinstead you can catch the Bluebell Railway steam train to Sheffield Park. Something I've been meaning to do for ages!

Fascinating stuff. Having grown up not too far away I've always wondered why the two lines to East Grinstead and Uckfield were kept open given they appear to terminate pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I remember when our family made the trip to East Grinstead just to say we'd been there the most exciting thing we found to do was go to a Chinese restaurant.
Can we expect more postings on these lines in the next few days?

East Grinstead is one of the places which when you arrive by train doesn't look especially promising. A grim 1960s concrete station right next to a busy main road. But as you've found, it gets much better once you are away from the station - lovely report.

Just thought you'd like to know that when I tried to get to your blog, my first attempt was told "Service Unavailable".

Has anyone else had this come up?

Had my first ever visit to Crawley last year for a meeting. I drove down (from E18) and, as the meeting finished by midday, I did a NT double-whammy with both Standen and Nymans - which is also well worth the trip, even though much of it is a burnt-out shell. But, yes, Standen is lovely. I bought, very cheaply, a load of organic veg grown in its garden. There was an exhibition of Evelyn De Morgan's paintings, which I admit I wasn't crazy about, but it was interesting nonetheless.

You sure get around! :D

Did you get the free cuppa at Standen offered to those who arrive on foot?

Bizarrely, I visited Standen and East Grinstead the weekend before you did - so my long walk out to Standen and back took place in the only rain we've had for weeks. I was cheesed off to discover that the independent bookshop also sells second-hand books. I've banned myself from buying new books at present, so I didn't go in to avoid temptation. Second-hand ones are allowed, though, so I rather missed out.

Ah East Grinstead - the Whitehall Ballroom on a Saturday night, the Wimpey bar where they sold - wait for it - frothy coffee. Never mind timber framed buildings, that's what teenagers like me came to town on the 409 for in the 1960s.

DG, did you get your free cuppa at Standen for arriving on foot?

There was a free cuppa for arriving on foot? Why did nobody tell me this?

So pleased you came out to the sticks for a change. A lovely olde worlde town, and Standen is my fav NT property. I now know why Beeching Way is called that. Thanks.
