Wonderful - been fascinated by the Neckinger for years. With reference to the Heygate - in the centre of the estate was a garden with two ladies (carytids - in it. They had previously been on a wall in Jamaica Road - does anyone know anything about them?

Fantastic and emotional. You've really evoked a lot of lost memories for me. Thank you.

I like the Elephant and Castle shopping centre. It's got a more friendly atmosphere than most other such places.

Otherwise the Elephant is a bit of a dump and I don't go there much since the Coronet stopped being a cinema. There's just too much traffic passing through.

Sheesh, whether you were aware of the import of it, or not, you've just made an observation about the 'evolution' of Britain that's a fair equal with any theory postulated by, say, Simon Schama.
The *new* E&C looks like it will definitely NOT be a place to serve goat stew in polystyrene trays.
So where will all the people who like goat stew go?
All this nice newness can lead only to one thing, which will be an exodus of displaced people. But where, oh where, will these poor (and happy to be poor) people be able to seek refuge, next?

Following one of your links, I came across this wonderful poem about the Heygate Estate:

I was stopped from taking a photo inside E&C shopping centre during Elefest a couple of years ago - of a shop display that was only going to be up for the evening, and i was told i would have to come back the next day and get permission... most disappointing.

When they were giving Bermondsey Abbey the archaeolgical once-over before building on it, they did a couple of tours of the dig and exposed ruins, it was fascinating. You really got a feel for the scale of the abbey relative to the present day streets (it was huge). They fill in the dig with sterile yellow sand so in future it will be obvious what was done. Some of the stone was brought from France (i believe it was the largest Cluniac abbey in Europe) and can be seen recycled into nearby doorsteps.

The Heygate is having a bit of a heyday at the moment TV wise - on Ashes to Ashes (along with some of the Aylesbury) last night and on The Bill a few weeks back.
