The Olympic stadium does look "unfinished" without its fabric wrap.
Why not sell some of the fabric space for advertising, and have a wrap with some, but not entirely, advertisements. Then it would pay for itself, or even make a profit.

No no no no no, please no adverts. It's an utterly ghastly idea (and completely against official Olympic ethos) to brand the stadium with a wrap peppered with sponsors logos.

The government are actively considering it, obviously.

Greg - Thanks for cut and pasting your regular Olympic rant. Like I said, I recommend videos of kittens.

£50m+ could have been saved by having the equestrian events at Windsor instead of Greenwich Park - then you could have had your 'wrap'.

Our beautiful park is already being fenced off and dug up - and will eventually be closed for months - all for a couple of days' worth of competition.

L@@K Kittens :-)

I went on a tour of the Olympic Park on Thursday and found it very interesting. The sheer scale of the place and level of construction activity is quite astounding. They are already starting to landscape parts of the park and I imagine it could be an attractive place to visit. At some point there will be some of my snaps on Flickr.

I am ambivalent about the Olympics per se because I'm not a great sports fan. Nonetheless they are coming to London and there's not much that can be done about that. We have to hope, though, that the legacy aspect really does work or else there will be huge resentment about the cost that has been incurred.

There were loads of press around - high end DSLR cameras slung round necks and video cameras on shoulders - which I assume was to do with the Orbit construction being launched.

DG, are you implying that if I am not interested in watching people trying to run in circles faster than other people I am the type of person with an unhealthy fascination for young pussies?
Anyone seen my coat?

Scrap the Orbit and put that money to the wrap instead! Even if they're not mutually linked, I'm sure it could be called the ArcelorMittal Curtain instead! :D

About the viewing tube, we were very miffed to travel right across London to visit, only to spend 5 minutes on the viewing deck before being told to clear out because a school party was coming in.
There were only about 10 of us there, and the school party (older teens) wasn't that big. Surely we could have shared the space without any problems, but no, we had to leave.
Plus a run in with an officious little security guard, while I tried to get a photo, just left a nasty taste in my mouth about the whole visit.

I reckon that £7m is .007% of £100bn. I believe the ODA budget is around £10bn, so maybe it's just .07%? Not that it affects your argument.

dg nods: I should never try doing maths first thing on a Sunday morning.

Thanks for the update DG. We made a visit to the ViewTube for the first time just a few weeks ago - so are amongst the people you mentioned that are turning Pudding Mill Lane DLR into a busy transport hub (sorta).

In fact we also explored the Bow Back Rivers, 3 Mills Lock and the site of the old BB house, all thanks to your blog (in fact using it via the mobile to try and piece together the story) - great to finally visit the places after reading about them over the years.

I for one, as a Londoner, am proper excited about the Olympics - cannot wait - it's going to be an amazing spectacle.

I can imagine the scene in house of one of Greg's neighbours.

There is a knock on the door the home owner opens the door and exclaims "Thank God your Jehovah Witnesses I thought you were my neighbour Greg come to bang on about the Olympics again. I wouldn't mind but I'm looking forward to them but you daren't tell him. If you even mention the word Olympics he rants on for an hour about how all involved are evil facists. I even regret telling him about my new camera I forgot it was made by Olympus and this even triggered an half hour rant. Any way I'm sorry I haven't got time to talk to you but try Greg he's two doors down, just don't mention the O word."

I just noticed I put "your" where I should have put "you're". I was being so carefull as well, as I know how picky some people reading this blog are.

Why isn't there an option to edit your comment after you publish it. It is always the way that you notice these errors after it is to late.
