If not getting enough money already from the compulsory license fee, the BBC now charges £50 to see more promotion for their shows!. No doubt there was plenty of merchandise available to purchase on top of the £50 entry for those with cash to spare. At least this is an optional spend unlike the license fee which I have to pay even though I do not watch Dr.Who.
Not many comments yet so here is it more rambling to get the ball rolling.
Of course not too long ago exhibitions and events like these would have been held at Earls Court or Olympia, in my childhood day it was an annual trip to Olympia for the National Boys and Girls Exhibition, (which I think some years was at the Horticultural halls). Bertrand Mills Circus and fun fair was a regular at Olympia each Christmas.- that gap in the market has been filled by WinterWonderland in Hyde Park
Regrettably Earls Court will soon be demolished. The Excel Centre never has the appeal to me that the old exhibition halls had. OK the Excel has very flexible spaces and can accommodate most events, the Boat Show being a large example. Yet the boat shows at Earls Court always seemed more fun, with boats floating in what was the swimming pool, while at the Excel they have a real river or docks to float in. Maybe Excel seems too clean, new and functional to me. Long live Olympia.
Meanwhile, in Leeds...
@John 1.22 - The BBC broadcasts a lot of stuff that I have no interest in, such as sport, soap operas and nature documentaries. But I don't go on about it because the BBC is for everyone. Not just you and not just Dr Who fans. Yes you do have to pay the license fee even though you don't watch Dr Who just like I have to pay it even though I don't watch Eastenders.
And there was me thinking DG was going to say he blagged a freebie to get in.
Silly me!
Awwww! I got all excited there for a moment!
@swirlythingy. You probably heard me laughing...
In the same way, my taxes pay for running lots of other things I don't use, like the M62, the schools on the Scilly Isles, and hospitals in Northumberland. At least the TV licence is one I can opt out of.

And I would not be surprised to learn that Doctor Who, like Top Gear, actually turns a profit for the BBC.
John, I was at Earls Court last week and I have never seen such a drab dirty unfit for purpose exhibition centre in all my life, cramped, lots of stalls selling food but nowhere to eat it, hundreds of people all sat on the floor, the ceiling tiles in the main arena all falling down, the quicker they pull the whole place down the better, I would gladly help if they asked me, the Excel is the complete opposite, clean spacious and fit for purpose, and as DG stated able to hold three different events at the same time, great, love it.
Doctor Who is indeed a nice money spinner for the BBC, sales abroad, dvd sales, toy sonic screwdrivers, £50 entrance charges...
