Merton: Abbey Mills. A hidden gem.

Barking and Dagenham - Valence House. http://www.lbbd.gov.uk/MuseumsAndHeritage/ValenceHouseMuseum/Pages/Home.aspx

Much better than Eastbury in my opinion.

For Brent BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Neasden (also commonly known as the Neasden Temple)is well worth a visit

How can you write, on consecutive days, about Wimbledon windmill and on how there's nothing to see in Merton?

Also, seconded Abbey Mills. It may look like a shopping centre, but it has a working waterwheel, which runs a rather nice pottery you can book sessions at.

There's some great places on this list but I'm not sure I would categorise all of them as free or minimal cost e.g. Eltham Palace costs nearly a tenner. It's definitely worth a visit though as are the Geffrye Museum, Horniman Museum and Museum of Docklands all of which are free for their permanent exhibitions.

Such good recommendations!!

Thanks for the recommendations.

Merton: Merton Abbey Mills always struck me as a market first, and a small watermill second. But Wimbledon Windmill, yes, that's going in.

Barking & Dagenham: Having visited neither, yet, I'll happily swap Eastbury for Valence House on your recommendation.

Brent: Shri Swaminarayan Mandir accepts walk-up visitors? So it does. Excellent - it's a great tour - so that's going in.

Greenwich: I agree, Eltham Palace is expensive (but excellent, and often ignored). For a cheaper local option, try the Fan Museum.

Oh, well there's a challenge. Is there some kind of prize for the first of us to visit them all?

Cheekily, I've made a Flickr group for those of us who'll do just that:

I went to Highgate Cemetery (again) on Friday, so I'm kicking off with that...

Given that I live right on the border between it and Wandsworth, I'm disappointed you could find nothing of interest in Kingston. I'd love to help but Dorich House is the best I can offer.

It's only open to the public three or four days a year, so I doubt it will make the final cut.

Well Croydon Airport Visitor centre made it and it is only open for a few hours on a Sunday twelve times a year. Mind you its the best Croydon can do - and even then its only just in the borough. The best thing in Croydon is East Croydon station because from there you can go to loads nice places.

Good list - wish I could go in a helicoptor to visit them all!

A fascinating place is Chelsea: Carlyle's House, 24 Cheyne Row, off the Chelsea Embankment. You step from the 21st century straight into c. 1880. Much more interesting than the Google info and pictures show.

Very nice list! Thanx dg

What about Camden: The Sloane Museum-free and a great way to learn about the origins of some of London's greatest buildings

DG, for Havering you seem to have forgotten about (or are unaware of) Upminster Windmill (open most weekends April to October, admission free) and Upminster Tithe Barn Museum of Nostalgia (built in 1450, apparently with 14,500 exhibits), also open various days per month from May-October (also free, I think).

Upminster Windmill sir? Why yes sir.

(the remainder of Havering will hopefully become clearer when it finally emerges from my jamjar)
